    Hi lads,

The missus has her eye on a tv from richer sounds that has built in freeview.

Does this mean anything at all to us in dublin?

Can we cancel our ntl and receive channels free of charge? - i know rte, tv3 would still need an external ariel

Would it be worth buying one with freeview or freesat built in or is it a waste of time in ireland?

    Thanks,
    Gary

TV's with Freeview built in will receive DTT signals through a Ariel but these are geared towards the UK market and in general won't decode Irish DTT signal without the help of a cam card. The UK uses mpeg2, Ireland uses mpeg4 standards. Irish DTT isn't officially running yet only a test service is in place from which your can currently receive RTE1 & 2, TG4 and rte news now.

However some parts of the East coast have DTT coverage from the UK (overspill) you'll have to ask about it with location details on the Terrestrial section of boards .

TV's with freesat built in are in my opinion are the easier to grasp/safer option , you'll need a Sat Dish just like what Sky provide and you'll be able to get all of the channels listed here : http://freesat.co.uk/ . You can't get RTE , TV3 etc , you'll need to google a UK or Northern Ireland postcode during setup .

EDIT :- If you get a TV with Freesat HD , I think you'll need to use a UK post code to get the new ITV HD channel

    Hope this helps

Built in freesat works well as well as MPEG4 for Irish DTT

Is freesat the same as FTA i.e. can I just plug in a TV with built in freesat to my existing FTA dish or do I need something else ?? a Post Code was mentioned above ??

Yes you can plug it into your dish if its is aligned to astra 2, the post code is only needed on first set up

I thought the TV tuner itself picked up the signal :o, ie no dish needed. Is this incorrect ?
I have a sky box SD in the attic with the signal sent to a no. of rooms using a splitter. I cant put a HD box in the attic as the cables run are not HDMI, so will not carry the HD signal. So I am looking at a new TV in one room with freesat HD thinking that this would mean that I could leave things as they are and pick up some HD channels via the TV for the room. This now seems like folly, looking at your info above, correct

All freesat receivers built in or not need a dish

Freeview is a UK Terrestrial system. Freesat is available here and a terrestrial digital service is being tested by RTE right now using mpeg 4 which is not compatible with freeview products.

Yes you can get up to 8 feeds from one dish using an octo lnb . Sky and Freesat use the same satellite orbital position so you can mix and match with the same dish.
