head in to waltons and pick up any SX. Great guitars for the price. You wont need to spend 250 anyway.. They obviously arent top class, but a lot better than the squier that I started on..

    +1 for the SX.

Take a look on www.adverts.ie and www.buyandsell.ie There are often good SX bargains to be had there.

Here is one for 60 euro on "Buy and Sell" :

I wouldn't recommend running the bass through a guitar amp. The low frequencies could play havoc with it, especially at high volume.

As for a bass guitar, my second bass was a Squier Precision which I still have. It's a solid instrument which would be fine as a starter bass.

Well I mean his son is starting out, so for the moment, so long as he keeps the bass at low volume, he should be alright me thinks. I've often run mics and basses through a guitar amp and haven't had any problem with sound quality or blowing the amp because it was kept at a reasonable level. (I did see your point on high volume ;))

I have an Ltd B-50 That I picked up off thomann. Need to do some work on it over the summer, but I absolutely love it ^^ Also picked up a behringer amp with it.

OP how old is your son, and how far is he going to take the instrument? After all there's no point in buying a bass to learn on if he's expecting to gig with it...

Edit: Just found this on Adverts... Would be perfect for your son http://www.adverts.ie/showproduct.php?product=212767&cat=191 I've used encore before, very good starter guitars, and you could get away with them for gigging, but you'd want to upgrade asap :)
