    Hi,

I'm looking to import a small order (120) bags from China to Ireland, and no they're not illegal knock offs they're toiletry bags. The manufacturer has given me a cost for shipping by sea and I have to organise the insurance and a shipping agent to take care of customs and handle clearance.

Can anyone give me advice on how to go about getting shipping insurance? Also, can you recommend an agent and any idea of insurance and agents costs?

    Thanks :)

    Hello Racram,

I would urge you to do your homework on the shipping aspect. I have posted a number of times on this issue. The problem is that Chinese Shipping agents will quote very low (below market) freight rates to Chinese shippers. Then they will instruct their agents in Ireland (or the UK / Continental Europe) to collect a "China Surcharge" from the consignee. The result is very high shipping costs if you calculate the total of Oceanrate and the local charges in Ireland

    Have a look at the following threads ;

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055756291
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055789305

Would suggest you ask your chinese supplier to advise who the corresponding agent in Ireland is of the Chinese Forwarder / Shipping company he intends to use. Contact them and find out what their charges are BEFORE the goods are shipped.

I can give you a comparison from FOB Chinese port. I can arrange insurance on your behalf and I can assist you with the customs clearance, customs classification and delivery.

I am attaching a document on import / export which I hope you will find beneficial. If you can supply information on the following items, I can provide you with total costs, including seafreight, insurance, customs duties (exact calculation), customs clearance and delivery to door, i.e. a total FOB to door service

    1) Shipping / FOB port in China
    2) Weight and dimensions of the goods. Need weight in kgs and dimensions per individual package, i.e. length x width x height
    3) Material the toiletry bags are made of (for customs classification)
    4) FOB Value of the merchandise
    5) Place of delivery in Ireland

    Look forward to your reply

    Best regards,
    Rudolf289

I have been selling shipping/logistics for 13 years and that summary of Marine Insurance on your attachment is the best I have ever seen, very clear and easy to follow- I would say maybe 10-15% of Irish companies I have dealt with ever insure their goods and then all hell breaks loose when the **** hits the fan

    HI All,

have to say that is a brilliant reply from Rudolph289 - particularly good advice with regard to finding out who the agent is this side, so you can check the charges.

I have found unfortuantely that often until a shipment is acutally booked and on the way the agent this side is sometimes unable to advise you of the charges being sent forward. I would definatley opt for the FOB shipment terms and pay for the freight myself this side. You get a much better deal on the charges this side when you go with this type of shipment.

Personally I have been in the situation, on more than once occassion, that the customer, for whom I am clearing the goods, feels s/he is getting a great deal on shipping and then is shocked to find that the charges in Ireland are more than they paid to get the things here in the first place.

Would like to say again brilliant advice !

Rudolf, I just had a very interesting conversation with a Chinese supplier who says that unless I have experience of importing materials into the country via Sea then he will not do business with me, unless I do it via UPS/DHL/TNT instead.

Now, as it happens, it just so happens that the Air Freight suits me down to the ground and keeps my operation profitable regardless, but suppose I want to get into the business of importing by sea??

It seems very fraught and with a lot of potential for being ripped off. How do I even begin to go about it in the first place? And then how do I avoid being ripped off?

    Cheers.

    Hello I drink it up,

There are quite a number of reputable Irish Companies that provide superb service from China to Ireland. I believe that if you do your homework on the shipping aspect, there is little chance of being ripped off.

Skipper 1984 obviously has a good experience of dealing with Avant Air & Sea. I would regard them as a good company to work with. They have a good network in China and know the market inside out. Mind you, they are not the only one. If you are looking for a second opinion on any aspect of your transport / customs requirements, let me know. I am happy to give you unbiased advice and help you source the best solution, be it air or sea (or Sea/Air .......). Have sent you a PM in response to your request for assistance with customs classification and some background to the commodity you intend to bring in by air.

    Cheers,
    Rudolf289
