Are you talking about pharmaceutical manufacturing or research and development labs?
There's a good few manufacturing plants about the country, Wyeth in Newbridge and Grangecastle, Takeda in Bray and Grangecastle, Pfizer in Cork to name a few. R & D labs I'm not so sure about I'm afraid.

Edit: Gerrard out in Swords might be R&D but you may need to check.

Typically 1 in 10,000 potential drugs ever makes it through research to market. Average cost to a company to get a drug to that point is usually around 1 billion dollars. And no, that is not hyperbole. Not all that surprising when you consider that a drug must undergo several years of pre-clinical research in vitro and in animals (which takes lots of paid man hours, reagents and equipment) before getting to the point of doing FDA-approved human trials, which generally take another 10 years and require the employment of thousands of people, many of whom are highly educated and skilled. Then you've got to apply to FDA equivalents in each territory you want to sell the drug in. And then you actually have to market the thing. Big glossy TV ads, where that's allowed. Reps to push the product to GPs and consultants everywhere else.

Wyeth doesn't exist anymore; it has been taken over by Pfizer. Gerard Labs make generic drugs.

I find you question a bit bizarre. Ireland has many pharmaceutical manufacturing sites making and testing both active ingredients and medicines. Lots of information at www.ipha.ie There is a small amount of R&D in Ireland but not really drug discovery, a process that is extremely painful and costly in itself. Some universities would be involved in this, often in sponsored programmes.

NOBODY would be able to set up their own drug production facilities in this country without a huge amount of money and well trained personnel to commission and qualify the facility. Well not legal ones anyway.

Sadly there is very little recruitment in the industry at present, and to be honest, I don't think there ever will be again when it's cheaper to locate further East, be that Europe or India/ China.

You're right, and I really should have remembered that given I left just after the takeover :o

Unfortunately I think I have to agree with you here too :(. I worked in the industry for nearly 8 years and at its peak people were asking for and getting ridiculous wages for very little return. Not all, but some. So I really couldn't blame the bigger companies for moving to anywhere with an as educated but cheaper workforce.
