Broken Nose Guard

    Hey,

I broke my nose recently playing rugby, went to tackle a center and he punched me in the nose as i made the tackle and broke it...w*nker.

It has healed pretty well and doesnt look bad but the doc said it will be very prone to breaking again, especially in the next couple of months.

Does anybody know if the wearing a nose guard like the one in this link is legal? and is it practical? Has anybody worn one before?

I play 2nd row and i normally wear a scrum cap so i dont know would it work, especially in scrums. Nose guards are pretty popular in basketball but its a very different sport, you rarely have contact around the head except for the odd elbow. Would i constantly be fixing it and putting it back on my face?

Don't worry, i dont care about looking stupid or like a p*ssy, i'll just hit those guys harder!! :D

    Thanks.

Seems to be quite a limited list of equipment you can wear:
    http://www.irb.com/lawregulations/approvedequipment/index.htmx

Edit - if it's especially prone over the next few months, then personally I'd think about calling it a day for this season given that it's nearly May anyway.

    Edit 2: Law 4:
    IRB wrote:
    4.1 ADDITIONAL ITEMS OF CLOTHING
    (a) A player may wear supports made of elasticated or compressible materials which must be
    washable.
    (b) A player may wear shin guards which conform with IRB Specifications (Regulation 12).
    (c) A player may wear ankle supports worn under socks, not extending higher than one third of
the length of the shin and, if rigid, from material other than metal.
    (d) A player may wear mitts (fingerless gloves) which must conform to IRB Specifications
    (Regulation 12).
    (e) A player may wear shoulder pads which must bear the IRB Approval Mark (Regulation 12).
    (f) A player may wear a mouth guard or dental protector.
    (g) A player may wear headgear which must bear the IRB Approval Mark (Regulation 12).
    (h) A player may wear bandages and/or dressings to cover or protect any injury.
    (i) A player may wear thin tape or other similar material as support and/or to prevent injury.
    ....
    4.4 BANNED ITEMS OF CLOTHING
    (a) A player must not wear any item that is contaminated by blood.
    (b) A player must not wear any item that is sharp or abrasive.
    (c) A player must not wear any items containing buckles, clips, rings, hinges, zippers, screws,
bolts or rigid material or projection not otherwise permitted under this Law.
    (d) A player must not wear jewellery such as rings or earrings.
    (e) A player must not wear gloves.
    (f) A player must not wear shorts with padding sewn into them.
    (g) A player must not wear any other item which does not conform with the IRB Specifications
    for such clothing (Regulation 12).
    (h) A player must not wear any item that is normally permitted by Law, but, in the referee’s
opinion that is liable to cause injury to a player.
    Law 4 Players’ Clothing
    37 INTERNATIONAL RUGBY BOARD
    (i) A player must not wear a single stud at the toe of the boot.
    (j) A player must not wear communication devices within that player’s clothing or attached to
    the body.
    (k) A player must not wear any additional item of clothing that does not conform to IRB
    Regulation 12.

Also - is that clear plastic very near the eyes? Could that not cause far worse injuries if you got a bang there and it broke?

I agree with eoin, take the rest of the season off if you will be prone to injury.

alternatively you could wear a bullseye target on the centre of your face.
You wouldnt be the first person to break their nose playing rugby. The mask you posted, would not do squat in terms of protection. Let it heal and go back then

Cheers for the replies guys. I knew it was a long shot if somebody else had worn one playing before, or if it was legal or practical.

I go back to the doc in 2 weeks and our team has only one tournement left in the season a week after that so, i'll see what he says. Maybe not worth the risk especially since i haven't played or trained in just over a month.

Its very fcuking annoying that a dirty play has ruined my entire season.

    Are padded undershorts still illegal?

French and English players seemed to be wearing them during the last 6 nations and they are available on a few rugby websites.

Good question - I wonder if the "sewn in" part provides some sort of loophole. These are being advertised as IRB legal anyway.

I couldnt logically see why they would be illegal since they'll protect the tackler and the tackled...

Harinorduquy wore one today by the looks of it.

according to the commentators on sky (yeah okay, fair point;))

that was the second face mask Hari had on, the first one (a rigid one) had been rejected by the officials

the one he was wearing was made of tape and padding (his mum is furious that the sofa is ruined apparently:rolleyes:)

What a player by the way! There should actually be an Imanol Harinorduquy appreciation thread.

Some player, he looked like the Elephant Man...

Fair play to him, putting in such a big game despite having that on. Youd have to have serious mental fortitude to overcome the what-if-someone-hits-off-it-and-rebreaks-my-nose factor as well as the physical restrictions I'm sure it places on breathing and vision.

I was more impressed that he played on with what seemed to be broken ribs, he went down like a sack of spuds on every hit, got treatment, got back up and went back into the fray to go and get hurt again.

    mad fecker :D

Since they're fingerless they're technically not gloves...

do they say anything about mittens with a bit of elastic that goes up one arm, down the other so you dont lose them?

I have to say - I reckon you'd look a little silly wearing a Hari style mask. Isn't it the end of the rugby season here anyway ?? Surely a 3 month break and then you are good to go for pre-season training in August.
