    Hi lads!

Im a guitarist by trade, but I want to step into the world of (amateur) recording!

So far, Ive a new MacBook, and Amplitube 2.

Not a huge recording studio, but hey! :D

Can anyone recommend a guitar interface that works well with the Mac and Amplitube?

At the moment, my recording software is GarageBand, but I get the feeling that its not much good...

    Hi Stephen,

IK (the ampliitube guys) do a thing called a stealthplug if you're looking for a cheapo option. It connects into your Mac and you plug the guitar into it.

    Hiya Stephen,

It's outside my area of knowledge specifically but I do know some folks who are using Line 6 stuff to record guitar into computer:

don't take my word for it though, just in case it sucks :)

I'm also a guitarist that wanted to do some amateur home recording.
Got a MBox 2 with ProTools LE.
The MBox is spot on as an interface, for me anyway.

I'm using a MacBook Pro and also have Reaper.

After a couple of months I've found that I tend to use Garageband for tracking quick riff ideas to send to the band.
It's real easy to get a simple drum loop going and just get recording.

So far I've found ProTools and Reaper to cumbersome for this.
They're both far superior in every way but I find that when I get an idea I just wanna hit record and Garageband is great for that.

If you intend making a home made demo then I'd suggest Reaper is a good buy. That way you're not tied to a specific interface like you are with ProTools. Two channels is grand for guitar but recording drums is a different story and the Digidesign options for 8 mic inputs aren't great.

That sound like a good solution mate!

But im not necessarily looking to take a cheapo route, I have no problem investing good money in good equipment! :)

Thanks man, that stuff looks good too!

Only thing Id be worried about, is that Line 6 amps are ridiculously bad compared to some of the other amps in their price bracket!

Line 6's amp tones are crap in real life, I wonder if they passed that on this?

Yeah, a friend of mine has an iMac with the ProTools 003 Factory rack, and its an excellent set up! Couldnt afford what he paid for that though, not if I intend to stay married!

Check out the IK website, they have pedal boards too that can do the job.

Or for the good stuff, Apogee have a pedal board thingy.

It's unusual that a guitarist would opt for the software route. Most of the serious guys on here will only used micd up amps.

Oh yeah, for studio work I just use my stacks, either Peavey 6505 or Marshall TSL and Shure SM57/58 mic's. :)

Im looking for something to use at home with the family, and true, I could use mic'd amps but its a bit of a pain in the bollocks to be honest!! :D

    Nice one Stephen:D

Check out the IK boards so online. They come with some Amplitube stuff included.
    Good luck sir.

    Personally I would recommend this!:

People, even some famous folks, use it live.

Nah, it's not just software... Go read that review.

Horse, courses, etc., but I greatly prefer the sounds as well.

and this is where I move out of my depth on a product like this. My only personal experience with Line6 products is a weekend playing with an effects unit.

The Mbox is going for around €200 including ProTools LE, so it's not too bad.

There are a bunch of other interfaces like the Apogee Duet, M-Audio Fast Track, Motu Ultra-lite, Cakewalk UA-25 that'll work with any recording software.
The Fast Track is pretty the same as the MBox and goes for €145 ish.

Reaper can be downloaded for free on a permanent trial basis. It's only €40 to buy it. That'd make a decent guitar recording set-up for €180.
Obvious you still need a decent mic, SM57 is pretty much the industry standard.
