Length of J1 trip for the summer?

Hey guys, just wondering is there a minimum set period you need to plan on staying in American for your J1? Me and a few friends want to head to San Francisco for 3 months but is it possible to do it in 2 instead if you want? I'm sure I'd manage the full 3 months but I don't want the summer to drag in any way, 2 months seems like a more do-able length of stay tbh.

And how would that affect your chances of getting a job, would places be more inclined to give you a job if you commit right to the end of August?

Yeah two months shouldn't be an issue. Its a five month visa but I'm sure even one month would be acceptable. Just be prepared that you might change your mind when you're out there. Maybe go for the 3 months and change your flights if you want to go home early, that doesn't break the bank, cost me $150 last year.

Ah ok, so I can decide to come home whenever I'm out there and all I have to do is change the flights with USIT and it'll cost me $150? That doesn't sound bad at all, I was expecting to have to pay the full price for a separate flight and let the originally return flight go to waste.

No, it won't cost you the full price, however I cannot say how much the flight change price will be. It depends on the availability and prices at the time, it could be more than that, it could be less. But I think it may be worth it. Or you could do it the other way around, book for two months and if you want extend the stay. Double check with USIT if this is possible though.

That's great Lisa thanks a lot, just wanted to make sure I didn't end up spending insane amounts of money booking a flight directly via the airline.

It can be tough enough to change flights if you book directly with the airline. The reason the flights are cheaper is because they are non-refundable non-changeable. If you book through the likes of USIT (might have to anyway) and let them know you want to be able to change your tickets then it might work out cheaper in the long run.

As regards the J1 you can leave whenever you want. Lot's of people leave half way through if they can't find work, get sick, family woes etc. No worries there, just get the visa for as long as you can (usually the date you're going back to school if you're not a final year) then leave whenever you want.
