New house with integrated garage - future tax implications?

Hi, we're hoping to build a new 2-storey house and are at the (very early) design stage. We're hoping to keep the house reasonably small - there's only the two of us. We'd like to have the garage attached/integrated to the house - I'm just worried that whenever property taxes come in then if the garage is integrated it'll be liable for tax. Just wondering if people have any opinions on this.

We're thinking of having just a kitchen (~5*5m) and sitting room (~5*5m) downstairs with a utility and wc. So the garage will be fairly substantial in relationship to the rest of the house (~6*7). We'd put the garage on the north side of the house in the hope of sheltering the living space. Don't know if the garage would be single storey or 2 storey. We'll probaby build some additional sheds at the back of the house, following on from the garage (e.g. for boiler, bicycles, junk, hens (I know!)).

Concerned now that our little house won't be so little anymore and we'll be hammered for taxes as we get older.

I think this thread would be more at home in the Taxation Forum.

Sounds like you're looking for advice on a law that hasn't come in yet.

Is the garage going to be for private use only? Or for carrying on business of some sort, e.g. car repair? I'd expect that'll be more important in determining tax treatment than whether it's integrated.

Short of looking into a crystal ball, no-one knows.

    No implications at present.
