My fiance and I were supposed to be getting married in Las Vegas tomorrow but are instead stuck at home. We were supposed to fly from Shannon last Friday morning but it was cancelled and we were rescheduled for Saturday morning instead. We went to bed at 2am Friday night having been reassured by Shannon Airport and Continental Airlines that the flight was coming but delayed and worst case scenario we would have to be bussed to Dublin to get it instead. We woke at 4am to get ready to go to the airport only to find that that airspace was not reopening and the flight was cancelled. The airline was fantastic and rescheduled us again for tomorrow.

Everyone in Vegas- the chapel, the reception venue, the hotel, transport company etc were so sympathetic and helpful and allowed us to postpone the wedding until Thursday. We have 9 guests over there since last week waiting for us to join them and 12 others in limbo. However we just found out our flight tomorrow is cancelled and the earliest they can rebook us is for the 28th April:( .

We are left with no choice but to cancel the wedding we have been planning for nearly 2 years. To say we are devastated is putting is mildly. I have to tell my 10 year old daughter when she gets in from school soon.

Has anyone else had plans affected by this? What are ye going to do?

Hey Bally8, thats pretty rough alright. I've nothing as bad as that, getting married on Saturday, so I suspect some people who are living abroad will miss wedding and we are supposed to be going on honeymoon next Monday. We might be lucky and stuff will be back to normal by then...

I've a US cousin who is in the states due to get married next Saturday. She is having her Honeymoon in Italy so its looking like that won't be happening. But at least I suppose she is having the Marriage done at least and she can probably put off the honeymoon for another time.
Tough times for a lot of people.

Can she not fly around the other way?

Not based on what I have read. Although she may have arranged that. She is based in NY state.

Not quite as bad as yours but had planned to propose to my own misses this week only she's stuck out of the country.. There might be light at the end of the tunnel though. Hope you get sorted. And remember good things come to those who wait. chin up:)

    Phew! Close Call there!:D

Op - Hopefully in 50 years time, you'll be able to look back on this and laugh with your husband. Best of luck

thanks guys ye are very sweet. We have been treated so well by everyone, we really have seen how decent people are. We managed to see the registrar today who agreed to marry us on Friday week- the same day we already had our after party arranged for 150 people. We are thrilled with this even though its not the wedding we had planned we will still be married and thats whats important.

We have a court date next week to seek the exemption from the 3 month waiting period so fingers crossed the judge has a heart and says its ok to go ahead.

Thanks again for all the lovely comments. Tomorrow will be tough but at least we have great hope for next week

Jumping through these hoops will just make it even more worthwhile. And then have a great honeymoon in Vegas :)

Well done on reorganising the wedding, I hope you have a fantastic day. A girl on the Ray Darcy Show this morning had her wedding in Spain cancelled so she is having it at home instead also. She had no problem getting the exemption so im sure you wont either.

Just an update on what happened to us since the volcano ruined our vegas wedding...

We are now married a month and had the most fabulous wedding here in Ireland. It was a fantastic day. So happy and full of love and joy. Not once did I feel sad or disappointed becasue it wasnt the original wedding we had planned.

The registry office in Nenagh is beautiful and they couldnt have been nicer or more helpful in helping us organising our wedding in less than 2 weeks. We had a lovely personal cermony with 14 guests and then a fab reception with 160 in Limerick. Just brilliant. Friends and family were great helping us out with the cake, flowers, desserts etc.

A special word of thanks has to go to Gina and Gary of Clique Photographic who contacted us through boards and offered us their services at an excellent discounted rate as they felt so sorry for us. They were fantastic. I really didnt want to have a photographer in the way or trying to organise me, and they didnt do anything like that, they were actually like 2 more guests in the wedding. We got our DVD back during the week and the photographs are just stunning. I would thoroughly recommend them.

My husband and I learned a very valuable lesson from all of this. Once we got over the disappointment of not having the wedding we planned for 2 years we quickly realised that the important thing was how we felt for each other and where ever we got married would be perfect because the promise you make on that day is 100 time more important than the venue or the music or any of those other thousand silly things we worry about when planning a wedding.

Bally8 so glad to hear you managed to get married and had a great day!! The volcano business really was a nightmare!

We got married in Italy on the 22nd of April. Most stressful week of my life! Took us 3 days to get to Italy, half my friends didnt get there and half my family (Dad included) made it by the skin of their teeth -3 hours before the wedding!!!! Still not recovered from the stress of it all but we managed to have a lovely day, just wish I had had enough time to relax and enjoy it and that my friends were around for it.

Ah sure as everyone says its a story to tell the grandkids!!!
