as above looking for a car with an engine equal to or greater than 1.5 litres under 3000 euro that has excellent MPG or is basically cheap to run

Was thinkng a Diesel would be the way to go??

Any ideas someone told me a 1.9TD Passat 2002 vintage would be a good one

Im kinda looking in the same price range and spec as you.

The main cars Im looking at are the 1.8 mondeo and the 1.6 passat (both petrol). Theres plenty of 00-03 models of those two on carzone for under 3k. Not really into getting a diesel myself so I dont know how much more economical it would be to get a diesel model

will be doing a fair amount of miles

diesel is running at about 10cent cheaper than petrol reckon a good diesel would pay for itslef in the long-run

anyone have any ideas

Have a 01 Avensis 2.0 diesel that would fit into your price bracket
50mpg easily done.

Needs a wash after the weekend though.

You mite get an 01/02 1.8 focus diesel for that sort of money bout 50mpg i think, their petrol models get 40mpg also

not much in your price bracket in a 1.6 diesel id say. if you do big miles the diesel will pay for its differance in tax in no time. id have a bora sooner than a passat for that money.. less troublesome suspension wise

I dont think it will cost you more if you got the diesel avensis. Do some sums and see for yourself. The extra tax is sometimes outweighed by the fuel economy and cheaper diesel. Plus the avensis diesel is a solid engine.

It might be a bit on the small side compared to the Passat you mention but you don't specify on size so I'll let you decide. The Clio tends to be more highly regarded than larger Renaults and this one could come into budget with a bit of haggeling. It has the 1.5 that meets the tax requirements and should comfortably exceed 60mpg, maybe even 65mpg depending on driving style.

the Seat Toledo seems to kick ass, 55MPG and haven't really come across any negative reviews or any recurring faults

Anyone have this car?? Any thoughts

For Toledo see Golf/Bora/Octavia, all share platform, engines etc so faults will be similar.
Only gripe I have with the Toledo is the rear seat room.

but to be fair a car that can get 50 odd MPG on cheap diesel has to save you cash over a year

'96-'00 Civic 1.5i LS has a VTEC-E valvetrain and will do over 50mpg on run. 114bhp so is pokey too, for a 1.5.

An Astra/Vectra 1.7TD would probably be worth a look. they're making them forever so one for any price range.
Don't expect unreal mpg on high miler stuff by the way.
