By far the best journalists in Ireland are

    Brendan O'Connor
    Eilis O'Hanlon
    Colm O'Rourke
    Ruth Dudley-Edwards
    Kevin Myers
    Leo Varadkar
    Mary Ellen Synon (sp)

These are the best visionaries as they set out what's needed in terms of public sector reform and offer an impartial non-partisan view of what's best for the economy

I hate trouble makers like Vincent Browne who have no solutions only criticism

    Jesus Christ...

The job of a journalist isn't to act as a crappy PR mouthpiece for the government.

If you describe Browne as a troublemaker, you should read some Hunter S Thompson! I think you'd love him..

On topic, I like Robert Fisk, Fintan O'Toole, Browne, HST, Tom Wolfe....and George Orwell.

    Eilis O'Hanlon
    Diarmuid Doyle
    Matt Cooper

I also enjoy A.A. Gill in the Sunday Times, and Charlie Brooker in the Guardian.

all my favourite hacks are dead

    lester bangs
    hunter thompson

There aren't many good Irish journalist, probably because the days of proper objective journalists is gone

Gene Kerrigen is good but why on earth would any intelligent person buy that sunday rag that pays his cheque?

i cannot agree with any in the original post, i'd argue they are some of the worst in Irish newspapers

There's a fantastic book by John Pilger, a collection of his favourite whistle-blowing, investigative journalism articles, there was one or two Irish writers in it but for the life of me I cannot remember who....great book though, some truly brilliant article in it

I bought that book, it was called Tell Me No Lies: Investigative Journalism and Its Triumphs, never got round to reading it, then grabbed it to give to a friend as a birthday present cos I never got round to buying her one... kinda wish I had been more organised! Can't find any Irish names mentioned in the amazon blurb - can you remember what they were writing about? The North? Sex abuse scandals?

Any of the Sunday Business Post Columnist.

Surprised to see an FF supporter listing Sindo columnists.

The rules of being a sindo columnist: -

    1. In the First paragraph state why RTÉ and the Irish Times are bad
    2. In the second paragraph if you have not stated that RTÉ or The Irish Times is bad then state it now
    3. In the Third paragraph let it be known that the Daily Mail is a British news paper
    4. Continue with a bunch of sarcastic remarks.

Why? The paper has a massive FF slant, Eoghan Harris, Willie O'Dea, Brendan O'Connor. They did a hatchet job on FG before the last election.

Historically it isn't an FF newspaper.

Mary Ellen Synon, Ruth Dudley Edwards and "impartial non-partisan" all in the same sentence? This is a level surely.

I'll get the obvious one out of the way...

Hunter S. Thompson. Legend, pure and simple.

Contemporary ones I like are Paddy Agnew, Miriam Lord and Tim Vickery. I've always enjoyed Garret Fitzgerald's pieces in IT too. I can't really think of any other ones that stand out for me.

Robert Christgau can be insightful in his music reviews but sometimes he's just a moan.

EDIT - I love the guys behind the Phoenix.

I can list the ones I don't like a lot quicker...

Shane Ross is probably the only Sunday Independent Columnist I like.

Investigatively, Mark Bowden's stuff with the Philadelpia Inquirer was quite good. Irish wise for politics Pat Leahy is quite good, and I always found David McCullagh pretty decent. Finally, although he mightn't be a journalist in the strictest sense of the word, charlie brooker is pretty good at analysing the news...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 265 ✭✭not bakunin

Yeah, the Phoenix is usually a great read. I think they were the first to report on Anglo's financial woes, back in Dec 08 (could be wrong there).

I found the Irish Times' Mark Hennessy (London correspondant) to be quite good during the election coverage recently.

David Foster Wallace, now there was a journalist!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,260 ✭✭✭jdivision

    Justine McCarthy
    Mick Clifford
    Sam Smyth (when he's bothered)
Matt Cooper (before he stopped reading the papers)
political guy in S Times Stephen something or other breaks stories as opposed to rehashing press releases like some of the other political guys mentioned elsewhere on this thread
    Tom Lyons
    Eamon Quinn
Maybe Harry McGee, he did some really good stuff in I Examiner, got lost in the mix in I Times but with Hennessy's departure could make a difference

Admittedly, he does sometimes use long words. It must be quite difficult for a Fianna Fail supporter to concentrate on reading something which contains words of more than two syllables, rather than the hackneyed, glib sound bytes to which they're more accustomed.

    Eilis O' Hanlon?
    Dear Sweet Jesus
She wrote an article before about how Global Warming is a con and we should carry on as we are guzzling our way through fossil fuels cause it sure isnt harming the planet.
I couldnt believe what I was reading.
And I vaguely remember a damning piece on Wayne O Donoghue when he was released from prison.
It seems this woman loves being in the minority EVERY time.
