The 'Dail' not the 'Doyle'

Something that has bugged me for a few years.

How come so many people on TV/radio (particularly in RTE) can't pronounce our main institution of government correctly?

I don't think it requires an A1 Gaeilge to get this right!

It's RTE's mid-Atantic horror. Seriously, Sharon ni Bheolain and Paul Reynolds pronunication would drive you up the wall. OUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRR-T-E

Let's face it basic pronunciation is a major challenge for most - particularly female - newsreaders in Ireland. The pronounce thirty as thirshee. R.T.E. as Orr Shee Eee. Why always a soft 'T' ? It only seems to have popped up in the last ten years or so. You don't hear Anne Doyle, Eileen Dunne etc mis-pronouncing.

Are you telling them that they should pronounce RTÉ = Ar Te Ee? or are you letting them know that they are incorrectly pronouncing it RTÉ = Or Te Ee?

Personally I think their over emphasis on Ar is pathetic we pronounce the letter Or in Ireland and there is nothing wrong with that. I am sure Canadian Newsreaders say Ut for Out. And we never seemed to have an issue with Pet Rebbit from the New Zealand Newsreader on TV3.

I don't think you get the soft Ts with RTÉ (When they say it) or at least I haven't noticed it. However the Barry's Tea add is high irrattating "Is Ihs a Dahse!"

To get fadas or Accents on letters

    Alt Gr + Shift + A = Á
    Alt Gr + a = á

While to get a euro symbol

    Alt Gr + 4 = €

Yep, or failing that go to another website like www.beo.ie and copy and paste the letters ;)

Not to mention Finna Gwale and the Theeshock. The rarely-observed dialect of Gaeilge Dhomhnaigh Bhroic.

In fairness if Fine Gael continue to spell their name incorrectly, what are RTÉ too do? ;)

I think the alveolar T of our ancestors is a forgotten jewel in modern Ireland.

I think the alveolar T of our ancestors is a forgotten jewel in modern Ireland.

Indeed one of the great mysteries of our time.

Why do Dooobs have such trouble(apart from lazy speech) with 'Ts'

"I done de Loh-o in de shopppp"

"I done the Lottho in de shopppp "

Has me beat into a cocked hat ,so it has!
