Protagonist boy sounds very very very annoying..

it does look good. Over the hedge and kung fu panda both surprised me in being better then expected so I'll give this the same chance (though madagascar 2 was pretty poor for the most part)

edit: Saying that though, a quick wiki shows it has gone a completely different route to its source material which is worrying.

Watched it for the second time with the daughter (4yrs) today. Pretty spectacular stuff. Great animation, the animation was second to none and the story evolved very well throughout the movie.

Some of the scenes were mindblowingly good and the character development was interesting. I personally would highly reccomend this movie for anyone young or old.

One thing I would say for parents though is that is can be quite intense for the young ones (it is quite jumpy) even for the adults, so it is definately well rated as a parental guidance type of film on the big screen (it is not for the nervous child).

I am surprised that it has not been mentioned or hyped by ads. It is a must see on the big screen really. Personally I found it far superior to Disneys latest creations like 'The princess and the Frog', that was garbage.

I am starting to really, really like Dreamworks in this area, they are going from strength to strength in creating literal fantastical works of imagination. Long may it last.

Dreamwork is well done on this tbh :D it is very obviously they tried very hard to make a 'decent and fun' animation (like their arch enemy Pixar :pac:) ,and they did well on this one.

highly recommend 'Up' if you havent seen already and this yr most anticipated Toy Story 3 is on its way!!!

i caught this too and i have to say i thought it was very well done.

i thought the way the dragon was animated was inspired, it literally had tons of facial features that easily conveyed what it was thinking when the two protagonists were getting to know each other and had some genuinly funny reactions.

got to admit its alot darker than i thought it was going to be too, but all in all i though it was great fun with the story matching the quality of the animation.

    worth seein IMO.

This really is a gem of a film. I used to despise Dreamworks films - for a while after Shrek, their films tended to just be talking animals and cheap pop culture references (I HATE cheap pop culture references). With this and Kung Fu Panda, though, they are definitely making significant strides towards maturity.

While the story may be a pretty standard coming of age tale, it can't really be overstated with how maturity they handle it. All the characters are well drawn and interesting, the action is inventive, and Toothless is a wonderful creation (and, to the makers endless credit, doesn't utter a word, although this must originate from the books). I read a review that says it always feels like the characters have a lot at stake in the film, which means it is compelling as an action film too. There really isn't a clear line between good and bad (
bar the crazy giant dragon thing, that is pretty fricking evil
), and even the main characters have very real flaws.

I saw it in 2D in the Savoy, and despite a tiny screen and bad sound, I was drawn into the film throughout based on the strength of the characters and writing. Plus, the action scenes and flying scenes have a wonderful sense of scale and energy.

Its a shame Chris Sanders (co-director) had such a bad experience at Disney trying to get his crazily ambitious and subversive film 'American Dog' (reimagined as Bolt) made, but luckily he found a home and has helped make a very memorable and compelling film. A Dreamworks film almost as good as a Pixar one? That is a sentence I'm pleasantly surprised to type :)

I heard its really good but I find it hard to believe that a film that has Gerard Butler in it can be anything but awful! :o

The story-line and script is superb. The characters are well portrayed and none of the dragons resemble each-other.

The colour literally bursts out of the screen like fireworks. Best animation since "UP".

And it was made for 3D. Unlike 90% of films coming out on 3D these days.

I'd give it 5/5 stars for its uniqueness and visual masterpiece!

Without doubt this and kick-ass have been the movies of the year for me.

Watched this today, fair enough it was on a small screen and not in 3D... but it's brilliant, excellent story and incredible scenes.. I had heard good things about it so I was expecting a lot from it and it delivered perfectly!

I finally got around to watching this on DVD last night and loved it. I really regret missing it at the cinema, though not in 3D. It's such a colourful film, I think it would have really lost something in 3D's dim picture.

I saw it on a flight to Miami last year, and didn't think a whole lot of it.

Just didn't think it was nearly as funny and entertaining as some of Pixar's. I know I shouldn't compare Dreamworks with Pixar, as Pixar are in a class of their own, but it's difficult not to.

I loved 'Despicable Me' though.. and not just for the minions. It was great fun.

I know, but I gave up expecting Pixar-like quality from Dreamworks a long time ago. And in fairness to Dreamworks, Pixar make it look so easy. All the same, I thought this and Megamind were really good. Although the latter was obviously heavily influenced by The Incredibles.

    Liked the ending with
Hiccup permanently losing his foot. For a (technically-speaking) kids film thats quite unusual I think and to be commended. Not sure they would do that in a Pixar film or in Dreamworks films past?

Just finished watching this and absolutely loved it. Was bored of a Sunday evening and decided to use some of my credit on iTunes. It's currently available to rent for 99cents(US).

Can't recommend it enough. As good as, if not better than Toy Story 3.

How to Train your Dragon is one of the few non-Pixars that reach the level of Pixar, Shrek 1+2 being the other obvious ones.
If you haven't seen it, it's time you do, great film with great visuals...

Sorry for dragging up a really old thread :o, love this film one if not my favorite animated film of recent years certainly up there with the best and wanted to show the other half it, then found out its currently not available to buy .

Surely with the 2nd one coming out you would think the first would be available.

Anyone know when it may become available?
