Complete novice here, looking for some lawn advice

Our lawn has been neglected for years and the winter has left it in a sorry state. Lots of moss, clay soil and weeds.

I picked up a bag of westland lawn sand and a couple of boxes lawn refresh (seeds coated in fertiliser) with the aim of killing off the moss & weeds, raking away the dead stuff in a fortnight or so, then thickening the lawn with the refresh grass seed.

However, the lawn sand instruction say not to use on new grass for 12 months. Will the new seed be damaged by the lawn sand if i overseed it in the next few weeks or should i wait 'til the autumn or even next spring?
