Thinking about getting a DS

I had a DS then a DS Lite for ages; a few years ago I destroyed it by spilling Doctor Pepper on it. I've thought about taking a look inside with a screwdriver(something similar happened to a hard-drive, and it worked again after I scraped the stuff off) but I can't even find one that fits the weird 3 prong thing it's not going on.

Since this has happened, two new DSes have come out with a third coming out soon. This is a bit much from Nintendo really. The camera in the I doesn't bother me, but I might enjoy the larger screen of the XL, especially since the device isn't overall much larger.

Where's the best place to buy a DS second hand? Where's the cheapest place I can get an XL, are there any on the second hand market yet and how much am I looking at?

Wrong. The 3DS is the successor to the current DS line. It's relative to a PS3 being the successor to a PS2.

How much do they cost in SMyths etc. generally?

If you still want to root around inside your DS, you'll need a 'Trigram' screwdriver. Deal Extreme sell them for just over $1 for a set.

Postage and Packing included. Takes between 8 and 15 days to get from China\Hong Kong to Ireland.

I own this set and it works well.

    Excellent.

The device powers up actually, but then shuts itself off. The last time I wrecked something with a soft drink, I just had to scrape off the residue - it's probably stopping something from connecting up. The circuit board must not be fried if it turns on and holds itself on for a couple of seconds.

Sounds promising, just get yourself a pack of cotton 'ear buds' and Isopropyl Alcohol and take your time.

The main area to worry about is the hinge, there are some flimsy bits of plastic near it that are unforgiving, use force and something'll snap.

YouTube is your friend, here's a typical DS Lite tear down video.

I forgot to add in my first post. Deal Extreme sell a lot of replacement DS parts.

I recommend another DS lite personally. More portable and plays GBA games, and I think the battery lasts longer too.

Thanks. Where would I get some alcohol? What part is most likely to have been messed up by the Dr.Pepper? The screen doesn't seem to be affectedf.

Your local chemist will stock a bottle like this one:

    dublinisoprop.jpg

Price can be between 8 and 15 euro, depending where you buy it, shop around..

Should last you a good long while, great for electronics and similar.

Hard to say what could stop the DS starting, there's still power. Clean everything on the circuit board!

Is there anything else I can use that's a bit cheaper? I don't have anything else to use it on, really. Wouldn't any kind of cleaning alcohol work?

I don't know, to be honest.
