What do you say when someone says "cheers?" I know it's saying thanks, but I don't feel like I should say you're welcome. Do you just say "cheers" back? This has been bothering me since I got here, and I've been too embarrassed to ask.

If it's as in 'thanks' nothing, just smile back or completely ignore them.

We went for an Indian the other night; every time any of us said 'cheers', the waiters said it back.

    [Waiter puts out plates]
    "Cheers, thank you"
    "Cheers"
    "...."

saying cheers back is just weird.

But cheers also means the same as sláinte, if someone toasts you and says cheers, you say it back

Don't say it to a buuurd, unless she's from Cork.

    Or Limerick.

You don't even really have to say a word, just make a slightly chirpy sound, that suggests 'all right'...

Something kinda like the sound Manny makes at about 0:58 in this video

EDIT: You might have to watch an ad on this video first, blaah
