It's nice that they can extend battery life but they're only able to do this because of the fairly extreme level of control they exert over developers. This stifles the iPhone in a lot of ways. You need only look at the number of jailbreaks for confirmation of users response to that stifling / desire to be free of it.

whats the story with multi tasking and text messages?

Currently on the iphone if you get a text you have to leave whatever app your in to reply to your texts. If your jailbroken you can install something like BiteSMS and this will let you send texts without having to quit an app.

So with 4.0 will the texts be handled the way BiteSMS handles then? as in you get an alert on your screen and a text box to type your reply

    Thanks

This should be fine. The system wakes up the text-message app when a text arrives, and suspends the active app. When you're finished with the text, the suspended app is woken up.

The restrictions are what the background app is allowed do. In general it would be suspended, but would still be able to play audio, or respond to incoming network-events/location-events/notifications. I'd need to look at the details but seems to me that Apple have struck a decent balance.

While less restrictive, I'm not sure I'd like the Android model on my phone, where any app is able to do whatever it wants in the background. 3rd-party apps tend to be greedy and always want to run. This means you could potentially have a lot of apps running in the background, consuming CPU/battery, even if you didn't necessarily need them to be running.

Having the breath of functionality of a PC is not necessary for a smart phone imho. What is most important is battery life, speed and usability and I think apple have the right strategy for a better balanced phone.

I will be happy enough with the app just getting frozen in the background and letting me reply to texts. If you can multi task (even restricted) it will be incentive enough for me to upgrade from my jailbreak 3G to the new model.
