Why do racing games do this!?

Just after having a session of PGR4 there and remembered the one thing that annoys me in most racing games (esp. arcade-y ones!)

Why is it when you are racing in a series event and you win the first race in the series you start in last place in the next race in the series? Surely you should start somehere closer to the top of the starting grid?

If you win, your obviously good. Putting you at the back means that its more interesting, as you'll have to pass everyone else. And vice-versa, it gives the people who arent as good a fighting chance.
