    hi ,

My car needs a visual retest ,,

Does it REALLY have to be done in the same centre or can it be a different one ?

There's no answer from the nct phone number .

    thanks .

Nope. Just book the retest online in whichever centre you like. :) But I think because it's just a visual you don't need a booking and can just ask them at reception in whatever centre to do it for you there and then, because a visual only takes a second to do.

Says on the back of the NCT report sheet:

"Please be aware that all re-tests must be conducted at the test centre where the full test is carried out"

You may have more sway on the phone. The online system is poor

as far as im aware a re test let it be visual or not must be conducted at the facility that carried out the test the first day , i know this as we had an issue with failing on rear shocks of a mazda which were replaced with 2 new ones sent back and failed on shocks again brought it to local doe test centre and local garage and checked on their equipment to see if the shocks were actually faulty which they were not so rang nct test centres head office and they said go back to same centre and get it re tested they will look at it this evening brought it back and it failed again no charge but they were being right ignorant about it so complained to head office again and they said nothing u can do even if u feel u have issues with a centre the retest must be carried out in the centre that did the test unless we waited a month until we could then pay full test fee again and get it tested where we liked so off we went to kells a month later and it passed no problem !

I had to do a re-test on my civc recently ( Nrake Balance problem ) I rang to make the appointment ans was asked what centre i would like to go to.
Shouldnt be a problem. especially with the backlog. Maybe a cnacellation would be available on the da you rin in a different centre.;)

That's a different story to the OP as you'd be needing to be booked in so that your car could physically be put through the test(s) in the centre.

A visual retest is a, park the car out in the car park and a mechanic will come out from behind the reception desk and take a look and give you a yes/no within about 10 seconds, job.

If there was ever a time they'd allow you use a different centre, it'd be for a visual retest but you won't know until you ring up and ask them if it's a problem.
I'd just go back to the original centre if it wasn't too much hassle. Takes literally 3 minutes to get car looked at and leave with your new cert.

    Still a retest though.
    Visual or not
they are all trained in the same manner and must pass on the same principles.
Shouldnt make any difference to be hones Id say.

I only commented on this thread because my friend was in a similar situation recently. He had his car tested in Greenhills and it failed on the headlight alignment, and as he lives in Gorey he didn't want to drive all the way back to Dublin for the retest. So, he went online and booked the car into the Arklow NCT centre for the retest with no problem whatsoever. :)

I got a visual retest done last year in Greenhills that was originally done in Naas. Maybe it changed in the 3 years between this thread and then, I don't know.

I've got many multiple visuals done in different centres to the original test.

Headlight alignment isn't a visual retest. Well done for misleading the OP so authoritatively though.
