Controller problems

Neither of my 2 dualshock controllers will work unless they are wired to the ps3 via the usb quickcharge cable.
When I press the PS button, the 4 leds flash for a few seconds, then go out.
Both of them work fine when they are plugged in.
I have tried resetting them with the recessed button on the back of the controller, but no joy.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas on how I fix it?

Are they genuine controller or from eBay or similar?
There are DualShock clones being sold that look identical but don't work unless connected bu USB.

    100% genuine.
One came with the console, which I have for just over a year, and the other I bought in Tesco about 5 months ago.
Both worked fine up until last night. Was using the ps3 last weekend with no issues, when I tried to turn it on with the controller last night it would not work until it was plugged in.
Don't think it's a battery issue either. I definitely remember there being 2 bars left on the controller when I switched it off last weekend. Plus it would hardly happen to the 2 of them simultaneously!

Have you ever let the battery run out completely?

No, I'd always plug it in when the warning comes up on screen, and use the other one.

Ok, just 'cause I heard that if you let it run out, it won't work wirelessly anymore

hey people, i just had this problem, dont know what caused it. my 2 controllers wouldnt connect unless they were plugged in via USB.
i pressed the reset button (tiny hole on the back of the remote, above the sticker) with a pin and the controller turned off, then i pressed the PS button and they connected again :]

    Ver weird.
I was going to reset the ps3, took it upstairs and set it up to do it. And the controllers were working again!
I think it is something to do with the wireless in the house, it turns out there is problems with it all week that I wasn't aware of.
    Thanks for the suggestions.

It was probably the fact that you powered off the PS3 completely, thats how I fixed the same problem before.
