The Union Jack or Union Flag dates from the union of Ireland and Great Britain in 1801.
It consists of the red cross of Saint George (patron saint of England), edged in white, superimposed on the Cross of St Patrick (patron saint of Ireland), which are superimposed on the Saltire of Saint Andrew (patron saint of Scotland).
Wales, however, is not represented in the Union Flag by Wales' patron saint, Saint David.
    Its correct proportions are 1:2.
However, the version officially used by the British Army modifies the proportions to 3:5, and additionally two of the red diagonals are cropped.

    That's what it's about.

Why would they use the flag from another country though? Do they have idents that use the French and German flags?

Say it's in honour of the return of Britain's Got Talent, all 3 and a half hours of it, on TV3 tonight. God knows why they don't just rename it ITV Eire and stop shagging about.

    ITV Eire
    Ooh, the controversy.

Ah yeah... that's probably it... it's just really strange to see it, maybe it's just lazy 'plop a 3 on top of the uk ad' creativity rather than an attempt at subverting the state :)

    Ooh, the controversy.

Or even ITV West 'comin' at ya from the mainland, begorrah'. 'Viewers in Eire now have their own regional programme with Vincent Browne, to be sure to be sure. For everyone else on the mainland it's Help, I'm A 50 Stone Teen Who Smells Of Fish'.

Feck it can't stay away from boards

I don't think they have got around to showing "Das Supertalent" or "La France a un incroyable talent".
It is if Irish people have a chip on their shoulder about Britain....

Prehaps when TV3 are comfortable in their own skin.
TV3's aim is to tap the qualities of community pride, independence, creative talent, humor and determination that are a vital part of Irish society, and, in so doing, to bring to its audience a full representation of life in Ireland and of its interaction with the rest of the world.

Your right minikin it's just lazy 'plop a 3 on top of the uk ad'.

Okay now back to not posting :D

yeah... i can see how TV3 are tapping the qualities of Irish Community Pride, Irish Independence, Irish Creative talent, Irish Humor (sic) and Irish determination by showing a union jack with a '3' plopped on it... must be a metaphor for the new ireland or something :)

I fail to see the issue tbh.

It is just demonstrating what they really are, ITV1 Ireland.
