Toyota is recalling another 600,000 vehicles in US

Toyota has announced yet more recalls, the latest being 600,000 Sienna minivans in the US due to corrosion.

The news came a day after the Japanese company halted production of its Lexus GX 460 because of safety concerns.

The latest recall affects Siennas made between 1998 to 2010, which may suffer corrosion in the spare tyre carrier.

"In the worst case, the carrier cable may fail and the spare tyre could become separated from the vehicle," Toyota said in a statement.

The company said it was working on a solution to the problem.

On Tuesday, the Japanese carmaker halted sales of its Lexus GX 460 SUV worldwide after a US magazine, Consumer Reports, said the vehicle's handling during its tests posed a "safety risk".

Toyota also said it would test all of its other SUV models, including the Land Cruiser, Land Cruiser Prado and Rav4.

Concerning the Sienna recall, Toyota said prolonged exposure to road salt could result in excessive corrosion of the spare-tyre cable, and that they should be inspected by dealers.

    Rapid expansion

Toyota overtook General Motors in 2008 as the world's biggest carmaker, but has since blamed its quality control problems on its rapid expansion.

Executives from Toyota were fiercely criticised in the US Congress and the company's once high reputation has been left in tatters.

Toyota has recalled more than 8m vehicles since late 2009 for brake and accelerator defects, and is facing 97 lawsuits for damages for injury or death linked to claims that cars were faulty.

The magazine issued a rare warning not to buy the vehicle because its driving tests revealed a problem that could cause the vehicle to roll over.

There's more than that like. Cheap 4X4 anyone?

That was the previous major Toyota recall a couple of days ago of the Lexus GX 460. This new recall is for Sienna minivans. I'm not too sure what they are and where they are sold though...

I think that the thread should be retitled "yet another excuse to toyota bash thread", im getting fed up with people saying toyota are terrible ect, EVERY car manafacute has had to make recalls but for some reason people pick on the toyota recalls, and before people start saying they are being picked on because of the throttle thing the part that fialed is a seimens electronic part not a toyota part so they wern't even to blame!!!!!! and no i dont work for toyota nor do i particurally prefear them to any other brand just getting fed up hearing all this!!!

A rep from Toyota said, "there was too much growth and not enough training", or something similar. I'd say that was the problem with most of the economy.

Yeah. It's much better when everyone focuses their energy on French cars,
and before people start saying they are being picked on because of the throttle thing the part that fialed is a seimens electronic part not a toyota part so they wern't even to blame!!!!!! and no i dont work for toyota nor do i particurally prefear them to any other brand just getting fed up hearing all this!!!

Did Renault manufacturer their own window regulators for the last Megane in house?

How much of most recalls are for parts designed andbuilt by the actuall manufacturers?

I saw one of those Sienna MPV's in Terenure not too long ago. Must have been a personal import from America.

As for the rust, it's like Toyota's of the 70's and 80's all over again!

Why do some manufacturers insist on using shoddy suppliers? A Lucas part failed in the wife's Almera and a mechanic I mentioned it to said "Lucas were making shíte 25 years ago, and are still making shíte". I was surprised Nissan were using that brand, as was he.

Who were the regulators made by (I didn't know there was a problem)?

For decades the automotive industry as a hole has been squeezing suppliers on price, often beyond endurance.
Eventually quality starts to slip and compromises are made.

Compare car prices to relative income over the decades and you will find that cars actually have been getting cheaper all the time, even though they are a lot more complex these days.

True, but not all manufacturers have consistent quality problems, caused by 3rd party parts, or otherwise.

Ultimately if a manufacturer insists on buying shíte parts, then ultimately they will have to take the rap when they go wrong.

As suggested, its all down to price. Merc did it a few years ago and outsourced their electronics, and look at the results. Crap cars all of a sudden. When I say crap - they would leave you on the side of the road more often than not.
Toyota obviously put the squeeze on suppliers in the current economic climate, as do all large companies; even they don't need to do so financially.
I see it in my own workplace every day. It's all about yield and profits at the end of the day.
Toyota are now at the receiving end of a very ”prejudice" (probably the wrong word to use here), congress in the states that just can't wait to hurt the non-American car manufacturer. Toyota over took GM in 2008 as the worlds largest car manufacturer.
The Americans will of course blow this out of proportion. A recall on any one of Toyota's cars could damage them both financially, with the sheer volume of recalls and do serious damage to their reputation in the States.
To me it seems like the Americans are protecting their own, and in that respect I admire them. However, a rusting wheel well.....ffs.
Imagine what the recall count would have been years ago with the original Japanese cars that were sold in Europe.
I remember being in the back of my grandmother's Fiat (151 or something) when I was a child and lifting the rear foot mat and seeing the road flying by through a hole in the floor as she drove. I thought it was great craic.
I know things are a lot different now, and safety is paramount but I think they are taking the p1ss with Toyota.
