Just wondering what happens if your not in a NBS area but you cant get BB over a phone line, 3 or wireless provider.
I know the NBS was set-up so everyone can get some form of BB, but if your outside the NBS is it just tough luck?

No, that's not true. The NBS was set up so that it looked like something was being done. They admitted at start it would leave out lots of people (my estimate 5% to 10%) and not only that, it doesn't provide Broadband!

3 is ONLY a mobile phone network. The only advantage of being in an NBS area is if you can't get 3's phone service, then they have to supply you superior more expensive Satellite technology.

Satellite (VSAT) is nearly Broadband, it just has high latency and often high contention.

    Broadband
    • Always On (3 modems have to connect, you may not connect)
    • Controlled contention (Mobile there is little control of contention, 10 to 20 mobile users in your sector will "kill" your mobile modem connection speed)
    • Low latency about 10ms to 50ms. (3 Latency is 80ms to 2000ms, typically 170ms)
    • Unique Public IP (3 use a transparent proxy, many things don't work)

3 have no Wireless licences for Mobile or Fixed Wireless data. They only have a 3G phone licence. The 3G system allows the spectrum to be shared with data connections, but voice calls have priorioty, and data is a layer on the air interface. HSPA is a retrofit to the 3G phone standard. Unlike Cable or DSL or Fixed Wireless Broadband, the quoted speed is actually the SINGLE user speed for the WHOLE sector of the mast. Very misleading marketing.

The Rural Broadband Reach Scheme (aka URP ) may deal with cases like yours (probably by satellite) but there is no definite start date and it is unlikely to begin this year or before the NBS has been finished.

There was a thread on it here
