Filling chipped.

    Hi all.
I have a silver filling on my second last molar from the back (not counting my wisdom tooth) on the right side. Apologies if my terminology is bad. I got it done about ten years ago. It has gradually worn down over the years and a bit of it chipped off a few days ago so the tooth under it is exposed. I'm making an appointment with the dentist tomorrow to get it sorted. I know you won't be able to say for sure without seeing the tooth but can it just be filled back up?

I'm completely terrified of going because I don't want to get an extraction. I had one when I was younger but the tooth was very rotten. I haven't been to the dentist in ages and I think i will need at least 3 fillings.I'm getting nervous now just thinking about it...

Also just one other thing. I had braces for a couple of years and I still have a brace behind my two front teeth. The orthodontist told me I needed it to stop my teeth from forming a gap. Am I stuck with it forever?

the answer to both questions is very likely. unless the tooth is completely unrestorable or causing you serious pain, then there's no reason to extract it.
and if the orthodontist didn't make an appointment for you to have the retainer removed then you probably do have it for life.

most people that come in thinking they need 4 or 5 fillings end up leaving with none. i don't get how people always think that because they haven't been in years means they need a lot of work done. you could be another one of those!

Thanks for your response. We I know I will need the chipped filling replaced and I have one that I got at the same time on the other side that has worn down as well but has not chipped. I would like to get this replaced as sometimes I get a bit of sensitivity / ache there and I think this is caused by the filling being worn down. I could be completely wrong though!

I just have this deep rooted fear of the dentist since I got a permanent tooth extracted when I was 12/13. I was expecting some sort of machine or high tech gadget so to see a pair of pliers (at least that's what they looked like to me!) coming towards my mouth was a bit of a shock! To add insult to injury the dentist gave me my rotten tooth to bring home with me. I threw it out.

Maybe, I don't remember. I have attempted to block out all memory of the incident.

On the other hand I have very good memories of my orthodontist as when I got my braces off he sent me into a room to get a goodie bag of chocolate. So ironic... "Here you go, I just fixed your teeth, now go off and rot them!:P"
