I have heard my school are organizing a trip to China next April for all the senior cycle students. (I will be in 6th year as I am currently in 5th).

I have heard the trip will be 1300 euro in total for the whole trip (including flight from Dublin and back, 6 night stay at a hotel, breakfast, lunch and evening meals, tour buses, coaches, anything else).

The trip is supposedly only for TY's but they say if not enough of them apply it will open to the whole senior cycle (which I think is likely as I cannot imagine any of the current 3rd years having the money, some of them will but others won't).

Would it be worth it so close to the Leaving Cert and with the cost?

Hi, I was in China for the month of January. In my opinion it wouldnt be worth it:

    1) You're going half way across the world for 6 nights....thats a ridiculous notion in itself. Thats not nearly enough time for most countries let alone China. If you ever go there, you should spend at least 2 weeks(minimum) to get some sort of taste for what the place is all about.

    2) I dont know how mature you are but had I visited China when I was your age I reckon I would have probably disliked it for various reasons. If you misinterpret China for what it is now, you may be put off visiting the country ever again.

What i'd say to you is this, China is a great country to visit but I would probably wait until you're a little bit older just so you can grasp more easily why it is the way it is. I cant explain it on a forum but China is a world away from how and where we live. Also, you should definitely spend more than 6 nights there.........its a massive place. I spent nearly four weeks and barely got a flavour.

But on the other hand, because you'll be on a school tour, you'll be safe and sound with no hope of getting lost in the beijing hutongs and you'll probably just be brought to the touristy places a la great wall etc. Thats all fine and you'll enjoy it but I, personally wouldnt bother for the sake of just seeing the touristy sights alone.

China is very far away and very very big :)
So i agree 6 days hardly seems worth it but saying that, youre probably only going to goto bejing so 6 days there should be ok (not great). you will see the major tourist site's, which means next time you go you can skip these :)

As far as I remember Bejing is 8 times bigger then New york and moscow put together lol

It will be a class experience for sure where else could you eat Baby shark's on a stick and see a dictator dead for 30+ yrs in suspended animation being revered by passing crowds class :)
