Insurance disc question!!

I recently sold my car privately and I obviously took the insurance disk off thw windscreen. In my wisdom I left the disk on my mantelpiece and it was duly thrown out in the rubbish.

Basically I'm going looking at a car tomorrow and obviously if I wanted to buy I would have an insurance disc. I'm assuming the insurance company will cover me anyway but if I'm stopped am I autmatically done for non-display??

your insurance policy is not dependent on whether you have a disc in your window or not so yes, they will cover you if you have an active policy which covers you to drive the vehicle in question.

(you should of course always check with your insurance company regardless of how certain someone on a forum sounds).

You cant put your old insurance disk in your new car anyway.

You need to tell your insurance company of the switch, otherwise they will only give you 3rd party cover at best and that is if they even honour that. The old disc would have been no use at all for the new one as it was based on a different car.

    +1

The old disc was in relation to your insurance policy on your previous car which you have now sold, you cannot put it on any other vehicle. Once you transfer your insurance over to the new car your insurance company will send you out a new disc.

In the meantime until you get your new disc and you were stopped at a checkpoint by Garda he may ask you to produce your insurance cert within 10 days at a Garda station of your choice.

The important thing is to make sure that you transfer your insurance over to your new car before driving it, just don't park on a metered area as you can still receive a fine from a traffic warden for not displaying a current valid insurance disc. Be aware that this offence is not the same as not having insurance.

Thanks for that. Honestly didn't realise I couldn't put the disc from the old car onto the new one. I know the old reg would be on the disc but thinking about it now it would probably look worse if I was stopped with that.

I can switch in the morn so hopefully.
