Experiences getting MacBook repaired in Dublin

    Hi all,

Just wanted to ask everyone here about the appalling state of Apple Authorised Service Providers in Dublin. I went to evad/dmac on Ushers Island, Dublin 8, and I would be sorry to believe that there are other shops like that.

    <rant>

My white MacBook suddenly lost all sound, and like a fool, I went to the first place on the Apple Service list. They told me in there that I needed to get the logic board replaced, fair enough. This was on Tuesday morning, (6th April). They said "come back on Friday, it should be ready then". I came back on the Friday then, and the attitude they adopted towards me was "What do you want this time then?!"

They said "It isn't ready, come back Tuesday." Came back on Tuesday, and more attitude for daring to ask about my laptop! They said "We have the parts, we'll do it today, we'll phone you when it's ready." (which makes me wonder what they were doing with my laptop for a week, but anyway! :pac:)

I waited until this morning, still no phone call. I phoned them, and they said "It was fixed on Tuesday, come and get it now." Unbelievable, but it gets worse!! They had replaced the logic board, alright, but now, there's all sorts of stuff wrong.

No USB, Firewire or Line In work, the CD drive doesn't work, and the top right of the screen is completely and utterly dead. Tried clearing PRAM, resetting the PMU, all of that. The screen worked for all of 5 mins in the shop, and when I was watching a video later, it just went dark!! I'm actually going out of my mind!!

    </rant>

Does anyone know where I can get it fixed, I mean, really fixed?! Don't particularly want to go back there again, and I don't really wanna go to Belfast to the Apple Store... any help at all is appreciated! ;)

    Hi Padgeman,

Firstly, I know how you feel, my logic board had to be replaced in my MBP during the summer. I dropped mine into CompuB in Limerick on a Monday morning and I had it back fully fixed by Tuesday evening! Now thats service...!!!

CompuB are actually opening their flagship store on Dublins Grafton street tomorrow. I highly recommend you drop in & talk to the guys. They are extremely knowledgeable, friendly and courteous staff.

I highly recommend CompuB, You won't be disappointed !!!

    Hope this helps!

I must mention that I am in no way affiliated with CompuB, nor am I an employee. I am just a loyal customer, and would like to share my great experience to date with fellow Boardies!

    Thanks :)

    lol!

Thats crap OP. I dropped mine into Mactivate in Blanchardstown and they were very good. I've seen other people on boards give out about them but I had no problems and they had it ready within one or two days. I used them cos my friend used them and she found them good as well. We both thought it might have been an advantage being female though. The man who helped both of us was 'REALLY' friendly!!! ha

I've found Bondi on Fumbally Lane to be the best.

    http://www.bondigroup.ie/Home.html

They don't do warranty repairs though.

    Sounds like a nightmare alright.

I've had a good experience with Dectek in Blanchardstown.

Mactivate are the best. I've had dealings with every apple authorized repair centre in dublin (Including compuB when I was in limerick so I include them in saying dublin as they are opening here tomorrow).

I have had numerous apple laptops repaired and also my iMac, plus my brother got his machine repaired there. They put a microscopic dent in the bezel of my imac, once i pointed it out they accepted full responsibility and offered me half price apple care as my warranty was just up, completely replace the bezel or €50 cash as compensation. I took the cash, signed a form saying I accepted the cash as compensation.

Long story short, go with mactivate, they're the best by far.

Thank you all for the advice, what an amazing response! I think i'll go with Mactivate this time round, and no matter what, it couldn't be much worse than how it is now :)

    Thanks again everyone!

I'd second both Bondi and Mactivate. I've used both and I have found them great; Bondi especially but as mentioned they are unable to do warranty jobs, Applecare covered work or Apple call backs. Typetec are another Apple certified option but they can be snowed under with work at times so they may not be as quick.

As to Dektek/Evad I had reason to deal with them recently and I was lucky enough not to put my Macbook into them after how comical and ignorant their treatment of me was.

Yeah, I couldn't believe it when I went in the second time, and they just treated me with nothing but contempt! I bet it's cause my macbook was within warranty ;)

    Hi There, Dave.

I don't want to go OT and turn this into an anti Evad/Dektek thread but some time ago I went to Evad after calling Apple as my MB had a recurrence of the cracking problem. I was advised to call into a service agent so I popped into your showroom (It's nearby to me) where I was met by a repair man who refused firstly to take my MB in without explanation as to why he didn't want to look it. After a few minutes of me describing the background and showing him the MB's crack he eventually decided to give me a form to fill out. I repeated to him that there is a repair programme on said issue and he said he had not heard of the call back!

Upon filling out the form, he went away only to come back and ask me for a bench fee. At this stage I asked him to ring Apple as this issue had been addressed already and that they will confirm same; he told me that he'd have to examine it himself, contact them and then get back to me. He then gave me another form (The same one) and asked me to fill it out again as he chatted to another staff member.

I gave up at that stage, walked out and rang Mactivate on the spot. They took my details, confirmed that it was covered, ordered the part there and then and asked me to call in on Thursday where they replaced the cover on the spot.

I am not saying any one shop is perfect or anything but the messing around I got was of Laurel and Hardy IMO

    Hi Ham'nd'egger

You are 100 % correct , There is an extended program for Cracked or splintering of plastics near palm rest edge for the macbook range. I not sure as to why one of our engineer's would question this as we probably swap at least one of these everyday of the week. All i can say is either it was a long time ago and probably the engineer didn't know at the time there was an extension program for this problem or unfortunatly for me you spoke to one of our trainees at the time. One way or another its something i will take onboard and make sure it does't happen again.

    On lighter note
Not that im wishing for anyones MB to fail

Please ask for me personally if you every have any issue again.

Had a problem with my macbook pro there a week or so ago. Dropped it into TheMacShop on Merrion square. Timely, professional and courteous service. Would thoroughly recommend them.

speaking of experiences of CompuB - Last week I enquired about the value of my 2008 Macbook as part exchange for an upgrade, my current macbook has a cracked screen (external glass only - the LCD is still 100% intact)

Anyway - I contacted compub via their website and received a response offering €150 for my macbook - to sell for parts.

I certainly wont be dealing with them in the future with an offer like this - without even looking at my macbook - even if I sold it "AS IS" I would possibly get €700.

specs on the machine (which were given to Compub)
    2GHz Intel Core2Duo (Processor)
    2GB 1067MHz DDR3 RAM
    160GB Hard Drive
    13inch

You'd have to find some chump to sell them a broken MacBook for that money.

You'd be looking at about €500 for an undamaged one second hand.

Have used Mactivate twice in the past couple of years for warranty work, suffice to say my Mac is HAPPY :)

Feedback is always a great thing so when you have good news its even better. Those of you with Mac's like myself are always more guarded about our machines.

Sent a PM to Dave from EVAD on tuesday, dropped my macbook in on Wednesday, picked it up this morning all fixed. Super service, fast turnaround, all sorted.

    Another very happy customer here!

Hi I am a very unhappy MB owner :-(. My mac book has just developed a crack on the left side palm rest and I am particurarly disappointed becuase I treat it like a baby. Its about two years old and out of warranty. Is Apple covering the cost of repairing these cracks still?

    Hi soulman

Apple have an extended quality program for some of the MacBook range . If you pm me the serial. I can check your machine serial . We can then order the top case and replace it when you drop it to our site ,while you wait.

I recently had to have the DC mag port replaced on my 2010 MacBookPro. The fan connector also needed some solder level repair and most places I contacted wouldn't do the solder level repair.

I was in the process of posting it to ElectronicPartner in Galway who agreed to do both repairs when I came across Computerking in Leixlip. The post office was closed for lunch so I asked if they would take on the repair which they did.

They completed both repairs in a few days.
