    Male,
    17,
    provisional lisence,
    1.0 1989 toyota starlet,
    third party only,

    €6000

No joke, thats the quote i got from an insurance company.

I'd of thought a 1.0 1989 Toyota Starlet would have relatively cheap insurance?its by no means a boy racer car or anywhere near a high risk car.

Is getting insurance at my age possible anymore?Where the hell is a 17 year old supposed to get that sort of money? Worse still is the car only costs about 300 euro,i got it off and old granny whose had it from new!

Anyone here 17 with a car on a provisional licence?if so who did u get insured with and how much?

If thats the case, change the car over into your mom or dads name, pay them to insure the car and put you down as a name driver.... only an idea...:D

    Try a few insurance brokers

Car might cost €300 but you could cause thousands of damage with it!

Still 6k is a bit high alright, older cars might incur higher rates due to roadworthyness and easier to steal.

    Just got a quote of 3500 on a 1.3 corolla 1997,

2500 cheaper then a 1.0 starlet thats almost 10 years older then it....

Lot of boy racer types driving the boxy starlets lately, that's why the insurance is high. You should be able to get for cheaper than that though.

Older, cheaper cars are not necessarily going to be cheaper to insure.

Try looking for a quote for, say, a 1.0l Yaris, 2001 reg, and see what you get?

Older cars get higher loadings. Increased risk of a crash due to dated suspension, handling, brakes. Increased risk of accident inducing failures as well. Plus because the car is worth nothing their isn't a subconscious decision to deliberately avoid blowing a couple of grand. I got some quotes there and after ten years they started to rise.

    Heres why:
    17y/o - increase premium
    Male - increase premium
Learner Permit(no such thing as a provisional licence) - increase premium
Toyota Starlet - increase premium (they seem to be on the same blacklist as the civic etc)
Car over 10 - increase premium

Go to insure.ie and ring other insurance companies tosee if they will beat the quote

The boxy starlet is a no no for insurers at the minute.
Firstly get yourself a full licence, you cannot blame anyone for a bad quote when you havent bothered to show that you can actually pass a driving test.
Then get a car not favoured by boyracers using online quotes to figure out the cheapest car type for you.
    Shop around for cheap cover.
Named driver cover is not worth while for the last number of years as the insurers really are investigating these cases where a young man is insured on fathers car specially if it is the second car in the household. Fair enough 3rd party is all you need on that car & the insurers are bound to pay 3rd party claims against you even if you were untruthful with them. They can however come after you to recover everything they paid out. If you want to go that route, just be aware of that.

As mentioned, online quoting systems are terrible for under 25's. Best bet is to ring around to every insurance company/broker you can think of on Monday.

Its extremely difficult to insure a car over 20 years old, most companies won't do it at all, unless its a classic policy.

I agree getting a full licence should be a priority, however to say he hasn't bothered is a bit harsh. You can't just magically get it without ever being insured on a car.

OP your just going to have to ring around. Best option might be to go on as a named driver just while you get your full licence and to build up a bit of experience. Some companies will count named driver experience when you go out on your own.

I know everyone thinks Insurers have it in for young drivers but in this instance, it is the age of the car that is the problem. As one poster pointed out, it is not the value of the car but the damage it can do. Contact the same insurer again and make it a 10 year old version of the same car and see the difference

I'm 17, male, learners permit and have a 97 1l micra. My insurance is €2,300 with Axa for my own policy. Some places quoted me €5,000+ so OP just ring around absolutely everywhere.

I have been ringing for car insurance (first time) all day today, best quote i got was from axa.. 2700.
Im 18 have a fiat punto(98) and a provisional license.

I got outrageous quotes. Aviva quoted me - 5500, AIB 6870 (with a 1500 discount JOKE) and AA offered me 5380.
Who would even pay that for insurance?

ditch the boxy starlet mate, their not cool, or easy to insure , they are however dangerous shítboxes universally driven badly by scumbags

clean it up, sell it on for the same / more money to some scummer and buy something sensible

edit : just for a laugh, try commercial insurance on a car van , commercial insurance can be cheaper for younger drivers and you can still get private tax on the van , I paid 1850 when i was 18 for a 2.5turbo kia sorento with 0 ncb and only a few months full licence
