'Public Gallery' Q?.

This might seem like a really silly question to ask.

I've never been in a court before, apart from having never commited an offence I always kinda took the view that I'd rather not go out of my way to see someone else's misery.

But curiosity is getting the better of me, so the question - can I go into a court and see a case, or do I need special permission to do so?.

And somewhat related I guess (this one came up in conversation in the last few days so this might be my chance to clear it up), are military court martials open to the press and members of the public?.

Feel free to walk into any Court except where an "in camera" sign in on the door which essentially means in private and such matters as family law and some sexual offences are heard.

Other than these the doors are always open. Don't expect much. There's no drama like on tv. Quite the opposite in fact and to a lay observer you will soon get bored and want to leave!

Military Courts are also open to the general public to walk in and view.

Check courts.ie for a list of cases and Court No.

Juvenile courts are also off limits. Don't bother with the courts in Dublin. They are usually packed. Try the local courts like Tallaght. You usually get a bit of variety in them.

What about the public gallery in the Dáil ?

Can you just walk in or need to make a booking ?

For the Dáil, you need to be signed in. But email your TD, if they're any good, they'll be delighted to get you in. Thats fairly boring too though- go on a wednesday evening when theres a vote, and then hit the visitors bar
