Sitting around with a few friends the other week and we were talking about what our primary motivation (in terms of what we ultimately want to get out of it) for playing music is. Some of the resposnes surprised me! So for a bit of fun only, feel free to contribute to the poll and thread! :p

I can think of a few reasons that aren't on there...

I voted making a living. I'm not actually making a living at the moment but I love being in a band and would love to someday make enough to be full time, even for a short while.

:D Maybe I should modify to include 'a shag' and 'because therapy is too expensive'

Aye.... I've heard they're hard to find for someone with no musical background :p

Hmm... Can their be tiers of motivation? In the first place, I play because I love it, but what I decide to play is shaped by other motivations... Mostly trying to find things that others haven't, trying to get away from the 'rock guitar guy' stereotype that comes with playing guitar in a rock band.

Who voted 'recognition of talent'?

I play to give glory to Jesus Christ my Lord and saviour and I also ( through his grace ) get great enjoyment out of writing contemporary hymns.

    Because I have to.

"For the sheer pleasure" would be the closest option but it's more than that (I voted 'other').
I've had that burning in my guts since I was about 12. I'd just go crazy if I didn't.

    A bit like this really!^

In fact, I went to see a head doctor recently and when I mentioned that I play music with a couple of bands he lit up and said, "Oh very good, that always helps"! :)
