there is a thread just above about shopping in newyork. It will have LOTS of information for you

Main area for shopping is 34th street. That has Macys (bring your passport to the visitors centre for a discount card), Sephora, Victorias secret, gap, forever 21 etc. Times Square is between 42nd and 47th and that is brilliant at night time espeically. Full of people and a good few shops and restaurants too

For discount shopping get the bus from Port Authority to Woodbury Commons. Its about a 40 minute drive into the mountains (bring a wheely sports bag for your shopping so you dont have to carry it with you) http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/store_listing.asp?id=7
There are lots of shops there, great discounts.

Also, about 20 mins on a bus from Port Authority is Jersey Gardens. Its a huge shopping mall that has good bargains but you dont have to pay tax there.

5th Avenue is where you find Abercrombie, Chanel, Prada etc

Canal Street is chinatown where you get good knock off designer bags, jewellery etc

Centry 21 is like tk max but with good brand names, some deisgner things too. Its opposite ground zero

+1 on getting the Macy's visitor's discount. They apply it (11%) on top of already substantial store discounts (often up to 40-50%).

Has anyone gone to new york recently that could tell me??On a USA government website it says there is a waiver where people travelling from Ireland dont need one but im afraid ill get to the airport and not be able to go....disaster!!!

You need to complete an online application for an ESTA before you travel to the States. In addition, you will require a temporary visa, but the paperwork for this is done either in the airport or on the plane, so you don't need to worry about that.
