I might be able to source some for you. Let me ring my friend tomorrow and I'll PM you if they haven't sold them already.

you can just buy the manuals themselves, as opposed to sitting the courses

    Can you? From Independent?

The Griffith ones are awful btw.

So I'm led to believe from a friend of mine. Will have to wait till Monday to confirm. Would you recomend Ind over Griffith? Why?

I've just seen last years manuals. Griffith has a good few mistakes in it and it is just not as well written. Indo manuals are geared more towards passing the exam than the Griffith ones which are really just condensed textbooks.

It could just be preference, but I much preferred the look of the Indo manuals

    conundrum here.

I'm a griffith graduate and I did the KI prep course in Independant.

I've seen both sets of manuals and if it were me, and this is a personal opinion, I'd work more with the Independent Colleges manuals - but thats just me!

Agree with OisinT on his points.

And yes, if you contact the college, you can buy the manuals directly. As to what they cost - I dont know.

Thanks to both Eagle & Bear and Oisin T for your help. I reckon Indo manual is the best choice then. As stated if anyone out there has a copy of the constitution manual and is willing to sell, get in touch!

becareful buying old edition manuals - the law will have changed in some areas since last years manuals (and again of the 2008 manuals) so do get a copy and be working on it but dont place 100% reliance on it.

you should still check the 'Annual Review of Irish Law' and the Bar Review for updates in all the topics not just constitution.

I PM'd you about that manual

Well put it to you this way, I know of people who purchased the manuals seperately and studied at home

    so it happens :D

the very very best of luck with the entrance exams!

Guys I spoke with Indo College today and was told if I want a manual I must pay €375 for the privilege..

    any further ideas???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 328 ✭✭eagle_&_bear

well in all fairness, the manuals are really what you are paying for.

You can read just as much as sit in a room and have someone revise it with you.

Did you expect them to be cheap?

    :(

I must point out at this stage that I'm a first year BCL student. I'm looking for the manuals in order to study for my summer exams. I browsed one the constitution manual a few weeks ago and found it to be a very useful study aid. So hence I don't want to pay big money for what will essentially be just a study aid for first yr exams!

I didn't do Evidence in my undergrad but passed the KI entrance exam solely by learning off the manual from Independent Colleges. Absolutely excellent manuals. You still see a LOT of Inns students using the manuals in class/advocacy/exams. They are very useful.

And even in practice when you're in early years! I've all 5 manuals in my locker (just in case)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8 merlot k

€395 per subject or €1,800 for tuition in all five subjects

    ugh, so expensive!

Maybe we could get a small group of people together who want the new manuals, pool our money together and get one set, then get them photocopied and bound? Not entirely legal I know...

I may just have to use my own notes..sigh :)

How much are the independant manuals on the second handmarket. I'm thinking of buying them as I graduate Law and economics next year and want to attend kings inns

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,397 ✭✭✭✭FreudianSlippers

Not saying that that €450 is a ridiculous price but I, my girlfriend and 2 other people I know sold for €350. €450 may be a fair price at the moment seeing as though exams are close but wait until the exams are over and prices will come down.

I know they are a little bit more expensive but its because party there newer and partly i really need to get some of the cost back im just finished my BCL myself. I think they are going for about 325-350 but the best price i could give would be 425 ish!
