Yeah blades do not necessarily equate to your handicap more your ball striking. The sweet spot on blades is about the size of the fingernail on your little finger. In actual fact, you find very few pros hit an out and out blade - Adam Scott for one hits the AP2's. The advance in cavity/muscleback technology has given the player a lot more workability and forgiveness without sarcrificing feel.

Even more to your susceptibility to marketing or your ego. Blades are as obsolete as the hickory shaft. But I've nothing against any one playing with hickory shafts if thats what floats their boat.

If you're considering blades, best to get a set of progressive blades.

I'm still using Nike Pro Combo irons that I bought back in 2005.

Cavity back long irons -> Blade short irons.

Saying that, as mentioned, blades are for pure ball strikers. Very few can hit them consistently.

One good thing about getting blades is that it will actually better your ball striking.
Because you have to learn how to hit it more sweetly, it will take a longer time to get used to them for obvious reasons but in the long term it would help better your iron play. But you do have to practice a lot more to get it right.

    what are mizuno mp37's

I play off 4 and use Nike VR blades. They are great if you can use them but they really magnify bad shots. I use them because I play nearly everyday but if I didn't play so much I wouldn't use them. You're better off getting a progressive set as said above or a players type cavity iron like the callaway forged irons

Lovely blades have to say. Was close to switching to them a few years back. Atm I'am considering buying a set of MP 68 irons.

Brilliant irons you won't find a better set

Am currently playing with MP32's but am considering switching to a more forgiving club. I did drop from 7 to 5 with them last year so not all bad.

So I will keep an eye on thread to see views. A friend of mine off 4 plays with chunky clubs for want of a better word and he advocates the use of all technology available. Might just take his advice.

KJ CHoi played Ping G15 at the masters, about as much of a "game improvement" iron as you can get...

I am in two minds on this debate should you use or not use blades. I fully agree they are a harder club to hit but I am also aware that the asthetics of a club is so important to a player also. I went with the mp 57's , This gave me an all round better feel, look sleek and yet have some muscle to it also. I love the look of the new mp 68's but would need to try them before I would even consider buying them as the sweet spot is so much smaller. Great looking club though.

I dont think there is any written rule with irons, I know high handicappers with blades and will never change, low handicappers with big cavity back irons, guess its all personal. I would however be in favour of giving yourself the easiest, best chance to play well so would tend to stay away from blades until you are striking it very well.

Slightly off topic, apologies, but @ buachaill,
Can I ask how you find the MP-57s to play with ?
I'm currently on the MP-60s and am thinking of getting something a little more forgiving like the MP52 (which I think replaced the MP57s) but am wondering if there's much of a difference other than cosmetic.
    Thanks

Ive always played blades. Never hit any other iron. Not out of choice to start with because my first set was bought for me. They were a set ben hogan apex Irons.

Next set was another set of ben hogan apex only more modern:

Now I play mizuno mp67s which are a beautiful club.

    7ab2_26.JPG

Having played blades from three different decades (80's, 90's & 00's)
I can hand on heart say the new ones are waaaaay easier hit. You
dont get that stinger any more for one haha.

Its down to personal taste. I could never hit a chunky iron because they look horrible to my eye. Same as a lot of giant drivers on the market. If it looks sexy behind the ball at address then give it a go.

I still have my ben hogan apex set here. I can loan them to you if you want but they are harder to hit than the mizuno mp67 imo.

I must say I love them. I was custom fit and got a shaft that really suited me and puts a great flight on it. I have hit the new Mp52 and they feel every bit as nice as the 57's. In the looks end of things the 52 look far sleeker than the 57. The top line of the club is thin and looks very blady but all the muscle is at the bottom of the club were you would be striking ball anyway. Have to say dont think you could go far wrong with them. I generally would be a very good ball striker and these clubs behave well even when not struck great.

Thanks for that, pretty much what I was thinking myself. The 60s are just a tad unforgiving, so hopefully the new ones will let me get away with a little bit more on occassion. Probably will go for the 52s alright and get a custom fit for the shaft.
    Cheers

Like it messed up Tiger's? Yeah right.
I'd say absolutely give em a go. Blades reward good strikers but don't punsih poor ones anymore than other clubs except for the odd vibration in cold weather. A duff or thin will be no less ugly with cavity backs, thats all there is to it.

Spot on, all it comes down is if you're a consistently decent striker of the ball.

Might have a look at he MP 57's now after reading previous comments.

Mizuno really are suberb with their blades.

Never really followed this argument - 'you will play worse with them so you will have to improve your swing to be able to hit them'. Or is the idea that you practice with blades but play cavity backs when you want to score ?

I have the titliest 690mbs, same as above and i love them. Took me a while to get the hang of blades though.
Both practice and play with them in all comps. Maybe its just me but i really had to take a second look at how i swung the golf club so i could get a more consistant swing so i could hit these clubs. My whole long game as improved since which is never a bad thing really.
