Saw this talk on TED and its really interesting:)

Its designed to look at the chemistry in the atmosphere among other things and investigate the source of methane gas. The CGI sequence of how it will get flying on Mars is brilliant.

    From Wikipedia -
The Aerial Regional-scale Environmental Survey (ARES) is a proposed project by NASA's Langley Research Center to build a powered aircraft that would fly on Mars.[1][2][3] The ARES Team is actively working toward being selected and funded as the NASA's next Mars Scout Mission for a 2011 launch window,[4] enabling it to fly its high-value science payload on the first aircraft to fly over another planet.

ARES would travel to Mars compactly folded into a protective aeroshell; upon entry in the thin atmosphere, the capsule is designed to deploy a parachute to decelerate, followed by ARES release at altitude. The aircraft is intended to fly at about 400 mph (644 km/h) and fly for about one hour.

Among other things, the aircraft would investigate the atmosphere, weak magnetic field and to search for life on Mars
