I helped my mate the other day, we eventually bought some in mcguirks after trying a few places (heatons, elverys, mcguirks). Wilson Comp ultra were the set he bought, i think about 250€ ish..

have to go to the range in a couple of days, but they do look like a nice club, nice weight too, and the reviews online are nice.

driver, 3w, 2 hybrids, 5i-sw, putter, bag and a free cart.

Seems good, thanks for the reply!

Anybody else got any suggestions? Is there any online options?

It depends on how seriously you think you'll take the sport and what your budget is.

I had a mix and match rubbish cobbled together set of irons, and a rather cheap set of metal woods.
This had served me well for donkeys years as I had only played a 3 or 4 times a year for a long time, but I wanted to play a bit more regularly so looked to get a proper set.

So about 2 years ago I bought a set of Wilson Staff ci6 3-PW irons on ebay for about €180 delivered from the US, then I joined a club last year, got a handicap, and started to play a bit more, so needed to upgrade other clubs.
In the past 12 months I've upgraded my woods, bought a Driver & matching 3w (€225 deal @ the time with free 3w), and just this week spent €90 on a hybrid to replace my old 5w.
Next up is my wedges, thinking of getting a set of 3 from MD Golf - but that will have to wait til later in the year.
After that will be my putter, but all in good time.
So when thats all done, over the course of 3 years or so I'll have spent ~€750 on getting a pretty decent set together.
I couldn't have justified that spend in one go when moving from 4 times a year to hoping to play some more.

I could have gone with the cheaper full set originally, but it wasn't what I really wanted long-term.
I knew I would eventually take it more seriously so the best option for me having already played a bit, was to piece it together.

Word of warning though - Be wary of ebay, lots of fakes out there. I was lucky, sussed it out before purchase & the set were genuine, weren't the latest model at the time so got them at a deal.

For online deals, try onlinegolf.co.uk, seems well trusted on here. Though also see what your local shop will do - I got my local place to almost match the online price for my driver + 3w, but was happy to pay the €20 extra for the service provided and ease of support if required.

So think of what you think you want - if starting from scratch, I'd go with full set deal as mentioned already, if you already know you'll take it seriously in the future, then consider piecing it together with quality pieces bit by bit.

    Thanks for the reply.

Was looking at these on onlinegolf.co.uk. They any good? I might get hit by customs though. How does the price compare to bricks and mortar shops? Going to have a look in Navada Bobs in Castlebar this weekend.

They clubs look good enough, Wilson are a decent club maker. Because that site is based in the UK there should/will be no problems with customs. I think thats only for stuff from the States (open to correction on that though!). I also use www.directgolf.co.uk as well which are also very good.

Just had a look and these are a good set for £274.03. Don't know if thats in your range and the lads on here might be able to tell you more (if they are beginners set, or for more advanced player etc) but Taylor Made are one of the best makes out there.

Worth checking Golf Style in Galway too - they do have good deals.
I think the likes of Wilson & Ram do good beginner sets.
If you can get a set of MD Golf, thats worth considering too - Irish made, and good quality - think they do beginner full sets, though not sure at what price range that would be.

Buy second hand. http://Adverts.ie is yer best bet or else try out some second hand stuff at your local pro shop. If you buy new & get serious you'll want to change your clubs again very quickly so best off spending as little as possible starting out.

For new clubs Id recommend http://golfstoreeurope.com Irish company & free delivery.

Bought stuff off this guy before 3 MD wedges he is a Pro up the north, look at the top one for irons and the bottom one for the Square driver and free 3 wood. The MD golf stuff is a really good place to start and there wedges are as good as any, check out golf monthly and todays golfer for reviews of there stuff.

They are draw clubs, so presumably offset to help people hit straighter.
If you want to learn, this is the wrong set up clubs to start with, as they are hiding any flaws that might exist in ones swing.

McGuirks surprisingly beat onlinegolf.co.uk when i checked a few clubs in there the otherday. wasnt expecting that. the said clubs were new Taylormade drivers.

bear in mind those taylor made clubs are priced in sterling, and do not include a putter, hybrids, woods, bag. so you would be over your budget with them, id recommend those clubs too, but perphaps as your 2nd set down the line?

I have a 1.5year old starter set of spalding irons with bag( &an old trolley too), like the ones they sell in mcguirks for 200euro minus the 3&5wood. They are in great condition and are just taking up space since I upgraded.

If your looking to take up golf this year I would be happy to swap them for a box Nike Vapour balls(retail about 20euro)

Least this way you get to start out with very little expence and the clubs get used again.

Let me know wht you think

Or if anyone else knows somone who is looking to start out feel free to msg me.

I recently upgraded my clubs and am looking to sell my old set:

Irons: Cobra s9 5-SW regular flex: These are a great set of irons, especially for a beginner (a quick search of the forum will give you some honest feedback from others that use them...)
Hybrid: Taylormade Burner 22 deg reg flex: Great replacement for the 3/4 iron, real easy to hit
Driver: Mizuno MX560 10.5 reg flex. Good forgiving driver
    Putter: Ping G5i Anser 34inch

I look after my clubs and all these are are in great nick....

Must get them up on adverts.ie tomorrow , let me know if your interested....

Red Army, how much are you looking for them?

If anybody else has any other suggestions please share them!!

I would tend to avoid "beginner" sets. You get a lot of clubs for the money but the quality will be a bit cheap.

I'd ask and look around for a 2nd hand set. You'll get much better clubs for the money.

If you will be playing mainly pitch and putt then you won't need any woods or even long irons.

A half set with a 5 wood or maybe also a 3 wood would be a good option. Try Ebay for a 2nd hand putter.
