Using a PC for DVB-C UPC Ireland

    Hi,

I want to use a PC for viewing, recording etc. from UPC Ireland, using a legitimate UPC subscribed card.

Its hard to find decent information on this, and how hard it is to set up. As I understand it I need a DVB-C Receiver PCI Card, a CAM module and my subscriber card along with my PC.

Can anyone point me to some decent material on how to choose the appropriate Receiver, CAM etc and how to set it up, so I can access the difficulty and the pitfalls.

I know its against the TOS, but it's not illegal.

    Thanks,

    Inq

At present they don't offer CAMs or authorise 3rd party equipment. So, I don't think it's possible.

There would be no harm in dropping them an email though and seeing if you can get the issue raised.

[MOD Edit] Inquitus this information is a little too close to info on how to pirate TV, which isn't allowed on these forums.

You're only allowed use the equipment UPC provide.

I'd wish the EU would force both cable and sat companies to offer Tuner to IP stream boxes compatible with other STB's/Media Centers as the FCC is about to do in the US.

Yeah, I'd love to be able to use a CAM and my TV receiver rather than the STB.

[MOD Edit] Inquitus, sorry, but you are not allowed to even talk about how piracy might work on this forum, per the forum charter. Do it again and you will be banned, final warning.

I see my prior post got snipped by the mods, fair enough, so I'll repost a high level summary.

Dude, you're not allowed use anything other than that supplied by UPC. Talking about such is against the rules here.

There's a big difference between breaking UPC's TOS, and breaking the law. What I am talking about is no different to talking about jailbreaking an iphone, whats banned on this forum is talk about how to steal cable you haven't paid for, which is "theft of service" and is against the law.

If UPC caught you using a PC to decrypt a legitimately paid for and subscribed package of channels, they can terminate their service agreement with you for breach of the TOS, but do nothing else. If they caught you stealing their service they could prosecute you for breaking the law, theres a huge gulf between the two.

Boards.ie at times is retarded, you can talk about jailbreaking an iphone, jtagging an xbox360 or flashing the drives firmware, softmodding a wii, or installing a custom firmware on a PSP, all of which breach TOS or copyright, but you cant talk about using a PC instead of an STB to watch a TV service you have paid for.

Yeah, I think this is pretty much a rip-off, they enforce customers to buy (loan) a hardware which actually has nothing to do with the service directly.

I don't think they have the intention to change this policy, since this actually brings profit...

...but... Offering an option for a DigiCard, like they do in Switzerland (http://www.upc-cablecom.ch/en/b2c/tv/empfangsgeraete/digicard.htm) would make sense.

I don't want piracy, I just hate the idea of having another energy consuming device in my house (+1 remote controller) while I have a fully DVB-C compliant television to do the same job. (OK, no recording with that, but I don't care :) )

I might raise this idea, hopefully they will listen...

They offer this option in the Netherlands as well, and I think they will offer it here eventually , They charge 4 Euros Per Month for the CI Module ..
