Is my social life gone?

I'm starting a new job tomorrow in a hotel, it's only a part time job, so I'm wondering what the rules are on working weekends and stuff when it's part time in a hotel.

I know the hotel industry is pretty hectic but do I have a right to have every third or fourth weekend off? or can I say bye bye to my social life?

I am over 18 by the way so obviously I will be obliged to work till after 10 pm.

    Any help would be great!

About 10 years ago or so, I used to work part time in a hotel. I found that I used to go out with other staff members after our shifts had ended, so it doesn't necessarily mean your social life was over. Back then I had the energy to go out if I was finished work at 11 pm and back on at 7 am the next morning!

There was never anything mentioned about having the right to have every third or fourth weekend off - so I don't know if that is the case. I do know that the weekends were when the hotel was busiest so it was when the part-timers were needed most.

I don't think there's any special rules relating to hotel work is there?

I used to work in a cinema and we'd finish late quite often. You tend to go out with your co-workers quite often, bring in clothes to get changed into, etc. You won't necessarily be working every weekend, either. And you can probably swap shifts with people from time to time. In this day and age it's quite likely that there's someone working there to look after a family, and they'd take any shift you give them! Plus you can go out during the week some times.

No, your social life is not gone.

Are you going to school/college, and is there a nightclub there?

When I worked in a pub/nightclub, I wouldn't work Sunday nights, as I had to go back to college on a Sunday night.

As for 4th weekend off, etc, no. When I worked full- and part-time over summer, I did every weekend, and only got the odd Friday night off when the part-timers were there.

You'll save a good bit of money, and make friends with the staff there. Your "weekend" will probably be during the weekdays when all your usual friends may be working. There were many a night that I'd finish work at 3am or 4am, and goto someone house for a few drinks, before leaving at 6am to goto sleep. You may not think 2 hours is much drinking, but when you've spent the previous 10 hours working on your feet, it's a good laugh.

You'll either love it or hate it.

Hate it, and it'll be hell, and you'll last a month at most. Love it, and you'll be there for a few years. It's a job you can do whilst at college, as it's often the weekends that are busy, so once you're trained up, they usually don't mind you only doing the weekends, as it frees up the full-timers, and takes the load off everyone.

My 2cents, from the view of a pub/nightclub employee.
