Best .308 round for barrel life?

    Howdy folk,

Was hoping to get some advise if anyone can help me out. I've got a .308 on the way and when I do get to use it, I want to take as good care of the barrel as possible.

I've read that the Hornady .308 150 GR BTSP round "uses a special cooler burning powder and revolutionary loading techniques you can achieve added velocity without the heat and pressure that can shorten barrel life."

Was just wondering if anyone knows if there is really any weight to this or if it's just marketing spiel (I realise this is probably very dificult to answer).

In general I'm just looking to see if anyone can recommend a round that goes easy on the barrel.

    Any thoughts would be great!

    Cheers!

Never heard of .308 being hard on barrels, it would be more important to run in the barrel properly, then find the round that suits your rifle and purpose best. There are threads here on running in new barrels.

just shoot it and enjoy it. 308s are easy enough on the barrel

run in of barrel is critical factor - after that, differnt rifles prefer different rounds.

I doubt you will wear out your barrel with normal practice, especially 308 (300Win a different story etc.)

Fire a shot clean, repeat etc.
It really depends on your expectation.
    The pro's do it.

Most don't, the difference is only noticed on paper IMHO.
More Important with competition rifles with tight tolerances

Thanks for all the replies guys. I really appreciate it :)

Read the thread about "running in barrels" and will be sure to do so once I get to take the rifle out on the range for the first time!

    Cheers!

One of the most important things is,
to clean the barrel first before you ever fire a shot.
