    Does anyone know if an old (1982) mercury 7.5 outboard has a reverse engine or is it forward gear only?

    Check to see if the engine will rotate 360 degrees on the mounting bracket, if it does, the reverse is by pointing it in the opposite direction, if not, it should have reverse.

    I would have had one of the 7.5's a good few yeas ago.
    It would have had reverse. Most engines above 3hp would have a gear selector.
