I'll be taking James for his 3 month assessment next Wednesday (a week early), I'm just wondering what they assess, I know the weight, length and head circumference but do they do any developmental tests?

They will check his eye sight by seeing if he will follow a light or finger and they will hold something out to him to see if he will see and and try grab it.

They didn't do either of them for DS!

She put him on his tummy to see if he could lift his head up, which he couldn't really at the time, and said to do lots of tummy time with him.

well the PHN checked kacie's head(circumfrence and the soft spot on top of it), lenght and weight. On top of those she also checked if Kacie would respond to sounds when she was facing in the opposite direction of the noise, put her on her tummy to see if she could lift her head.PHN also checked to see if Kacie could track something in her line of sight when it was moved as well as her strenght and ability to lift herself up when lying flat on her back.

    Thanks shortstuff!

Brought James this morning and the PHN did most of the things on your list. She asked me about his hearing rather than getting him to demonstrate. She didn't need to get him to fix and follow as she could see him do it watching me go get his nappy. She didn't get him to lift up from lying on his back but did sit him up and stand him up.

I also asked her about my C Section scar which was suddenly sore again yesterday after a month with nothing and James' teething.

    So what was checked was

    - Length
    - Weight
    - Head Circumference
    - Tone (Standing and Sitting)
    - Head Control (on tummy)
    - Skin
    - Soft Spot
    - Eyesight
    - Social Responses (smiling and interacting - asked about it)

I was also given a booklet on weaning and advised what the cues were for weaning and told to try not to wean before 6 months if possible.

There does seem to be a slight difference between what each PHN will check for at this age, some tend to leave some bits and piecies until later. At Kacies check the PHN didnt' go through weaning or feeding schedules with me as she is also my lactation specialist and i see her on mondays for the breastfeeding clinic so she was already aware of Kacie being on solids. If you think James may need to be weaned or put onto solids a bit earlier than six months then talk to your significant other and decide between yourselves. All 3 of mine were spoon fed before six months, then again when the boys were babies 16 weeks was the recommended age, but even at that they were still feed early. My eldests' PHN changed his formule 6 times before she said to spoon feed him and that was at 11 weeks( i couldnt' feed him for more than two weeks he was just way to hungry, I actually collapsed one evenin from feeding him).

Hope everything is ok your own recovery as well.
