Played Portarlington yesterday for the first time and must say i was very impressed with the course and its condition was excellent. One of our regular fourball partners mentioned the other day that they have an open singles on every Wednesday so with the nice weather we headed down, only €15 for visitors which IMO is excellent value for an open. One our group let us down with work commitments so we were joined by a member to make up the fourball, really nice gentleman and had some good advice for me as i hadnt played there before. Over 100 played in it, and the member was saying that during the summer they can get between 150-170 playing, now granted he said only about 70-80 would be visitors but still a great revenue earner in these times.

I would describe the course as a fun one to play as although not the toughest it has great mix of holes and some really good tight drving par 4s, on the 7th(index 1), 14th, 15th or 16th if your off line at all your in dense woods or in the case of the 16th on the right a river. The 3 par 5s are slightly short by modern standards(only one just over 500 yards) and i was up besides the green in 2 on most of them, not that it made much difference as i couldnt putt it into a bucket yesterday:D

Nice clubhouse aswell with lovely balcony area where i sampled a hard earned pint in the sun afterward with good grub. Found it to be very friendly towards visitors which partly is why i wanted to post this up and give them some good press and i would recommend the place to anyone for a game. Also I must not be the only one on here who likes it as when i was entering my score after, I seen they had printed off the blog page Kevin Markham had wrote up with his review of it and had it pride of place on the noticeboard. They had made sure to have highlighted his heading of "better than the K Club"!.

I played this track last summer and absolutely loved it. Fantastic course, and one of the oldest in Ireland I believe.
