Importing / Motor Tax / NCT

I know that this comes up regularly, but I still need to double check.

My understanding of the current rules is:

ALL imported vehicles have their VRT calculated according to their emissions.

Those with a first registration on or before December 31st, 2007 pay road tax on the old cc system.

Those with a first registration on or after January 1st, 2008 pay road tax on the new emissions system.

Cars under 4 years old are NCT exempt, and require their first NCT on the 4th anniversary of their first registration, at which point they are tested every 2 years until the 10th anniversary of their first registration, at which point they are tested annually.

Exceptions to this are cars over 30 years old.

    Is this correct?

Think so yes, and to bring it inline with the OMSP

Those with a first registration on or after January 1st, 2008 pay road tax on the new emissions system.

I thought it was mid 2008 that this change came about? Im thinking July for some reason?

Correct, however the 10 yrs anniversary and exception for 30 yrs old cars I'm not 100% deffo on

In 2008 when the rules were introcuced there was a slight water down of the initial rule which was that CO2 based road tax would only apply to cars registered from July 1st that year.

Cars from Jan 2008 to Jun 30th would first be taxed based on CC but the owner had the option on first tax renewal to either stay with CC based road tax or choose to be assessed under the CO2 based rules if that was advantageous to them.

I'm not sure, but I think the situation for a fresh import of a car first registered elsewhere between Jan 1st and Jun 30th 2008 is that the owner should have a choice to use whichever regime is to their advantage but a call to a local road tax office would be advisable to confirm.

    Nearly correct:

Except those in excess of 30 years old from date of first registration - VRT category C applies.

Annual NCT for cars over 10 doesn't come in until 1st June 2011.

Exceptions to this are cars 1st registered before 1st January 1980. (note: now a fixed date, although Vintage Motor Tax rate is still a "rolling" date)
