    Hi lads,

Anyone care to share their opinion on the 1.9 TDi and 2.0 TDi CR engines with respect to economy, reliability and performance? I do about 8-9 k miles a year. Also what are thoughts on the 1.4 TSI petrol engine?

    thanks
    yup

At such low mileage your not going to make the extra premium back you will pay for the diesel version.

1.4 TSi engine was available in a number of different states of tune. 122bhp, 140bhp and 170bhp. The 122bhp is the most common, the 140bhp is rare enough and 170bhp is best avoided as it has some well documented reliability issues. The TSi engines are good on fuel though but like anything if you have a heavy right foot then fuel economy will suffer.

BTW if you are considering a 2010 model then a 1.2 TSi engine has recently been launched across the VAG range. This has 105bhp.

And that is exactly where a Diesel shines
I will never go back to petrol
Also not much difference between diesel and petrol pricing now is there?

The argument about needing big mileage to make diesel worthwhile is no longer true & I wish people would stop using it. Diesel car is cheaper to fuel, cheaper to tax, new pricing is now similar to petrol version & used value will far exceed petrol version so the diesel is the common sense choice. I drive a petrol though :)

see this is what Im thinking. i drive a 98 corolla 1.6 at the minute and getting about 80-85 miles for €20. Im guessing id get a lot more than that on a diesel. I was just worried about the DPFs on the diesel engines. heard a lot of problems on these. Oh by the way, im looking to spend around 9 grand with my own car ;)

dont think you will get a 2.0 tdi cr for that money.. would you even get a 140bhp 2.0tdi pd for that??

what is the difference between PD and CR anyway?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,857 ✭✭✭Andrew33

I'm driving an 06 Octavia II with the 1.9TDi, I've 185,000km up and still turns in over 50mpg and pulls like a train. PD stands for Pump Dusse and CR stands for common rail. The 2.0CR supposedly drives more like a petrol engine and doesn't have that delicious low rev shove that you'd expect from a diesel. Have not driven one yet so can't say for sure how true that is.

If your mileage is low, and presumably in town, I'd avoid a diesel due to DPF issues. Also you'll avoid DMF issues too so to me it's a win win

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,088 ✭✭✭sean1141

pd is the older type engine found from about 01 onwards in mk4 bassed cars and others in the vag group. 1.9L ones came in 100/105 115 130 150 and 160 bhp. some of the mk5 based came with 105bhp 1.9 and 140 and 170bhp 2.0L pd tdi. the CR (common rail) is the newer type engine with the same power in the 2.0L range 140 and 170 bhp

are there any reliability issues with either?

if the correct oil was used from new and they were serviced on time they dont really give much bother. dual mass fly wheels can give bother on some and sometimes turbo trouble but this is mainly down to using the wrong oil and not giving it a chance to warm up or cool down afrer a long run(pd). parts are common enough. dont know much about the CR but id say one would be out of your budget. think they were released in 08

A quick blast on the motorway once in a while will keep the DPF happy.

Owend a PD130 for 2 and a half years, has 126k miles and no issues. Nice power and good economy - if only it sounded a bit nicer:pac:

Your only 22 yet youll drive a passat but not a skoda?
What about the octavia vrs? Id rather that than any of the cars you mentioned.

What about the octavia vrs? .

@22 Insurance might be a bit harsh for him

Maybe but he was looking at the 2.0 tdi engine for passat, golf, a4 etc. Insurance for the diesel vrs would be roughly the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,088 ✭✭✭sean1141

vrs would be classed as a sports model and more likely to be stolen/broken into than say an a4 with the same engine. my insurance would be E150 less in a 150 tdi vw bora than it is in my 150tdi leon. the leon looks like the petrol version so its more likely to be stolen than a bora. thats what my insurers told me anyway!! i still reckon its because the leon has fr after it on the log book!!

to put your mind at ease Vectra, my broker advised that the vRS is not heavily loaded. Her exact words were,"it would be different if it was an Evo or something"

as regards reliability of the tdi engines in the mk5 golf etc im not so sure on reliability or if what im about to mention applies to other models in the range but on the 1.9tdi caddy 2005- its got the pd engine and (ive got a hot start issue along with a load of members from the caddy club im in) a lot of people seem to be suffering from a hot start issue with them where they refuse to start for about 6 seconds if its warm not really an issue or so i thought until i conked it at a junction and a van coming meeting me brown trousers moment !

apart from that which is not really a terrible thing just not a thing easily resolved the clutches are a notorious weak spot and if u know what to listen out for when buying one ul hear a rattle from the clutch it would help if u had someone with u to press and release the clutch pedal to see if u can get it to stop or get it to rattle

    cool. nice one lads.
wouldnt worry about insurance really... ive a full clean licence 5 years and over 5 years NCB. also, ill be 23 when I get this car.
Im more worried about the cost of tax/fuel/maintenance more than insurance
I can get insured on a VRS octavia but I would prefer something a bit flashier! Was originally going to get an RX8 or something sporty but im toying the diesel idea now.

    possibly a GTI Golf...

Im also open to any suggestions!:D

OP would you consider a 320d? You'd definitely get a nice late (05) E46 for your budget.

    I have one and get 46/47mpg. 150bhp, I'm 23 and paying €650e fully comp with a €250 excess.

Also main dealers are doing oil change service for €140 now too which aint half bad, so not too expensive to maintain either.

One or two things to watch for when buying one but just a suggestion..

Its not the cost of the insurance that concerns me.. it is the Theft Risk factor..:(

    OH
I can get full comp for around €370 for a Vrs tdi :D

    Certainly, Axa.
I've had a car since I was 18, had 3yrs named driving which they have given me NCB for, and 2 yrs NCB in my own name.

Had a student policy last year and renewed this year to a normal policy, all details declared correctly, job title etc etc. I also have my girlfriend and father named on the policy.

So because of my experience I have 75% discount (worth ~€1700 according to the renewal).

I still asked if that was the best they could do though :D
