Screen cracked on iPhone - through no fault of my own...

I took my iPhone 3gs out of my pocket to find a crack across the screen. Had the phone in one of those socks, granted not the best protection in the world, but still... Have never in my life had a cover for a phone up to now so that sock was the best protection I've ever had for a phone and I've never damaged one til now.

I literally did nothing to break the screen (wasn't dropped, banged or anything). I know it's very hard to prove (but there is no point of impact or any scratches) but seeing as it wasn't damaged due to misuse or carelessness surely the replacement screen should be covered by warranty or guarantee right?? Has anyone heard of or had something similar happen themselves??

Who puts a phone in a sock? Was it a GAA sock and where you wearing in at the time? :)

No the warranty will not cover it, screens don't spontaniously crack, it must have got a knock. While it happened without your knowledge you still kinda to blame for only protecting it with one of those phone socks, they're nowhere near adequate for protecting an iPhone

I can see 3 possible possibilities that could cause the crack.

    1. Something hit your phone while it was in your pocket.

    2. A sniper tried to take you out, the shot was deflected by the phone. Count yourself lucky!

    3. Debris from the Icelandic Volcano clipped you, again the phone saved you.

None of the above would be covered by warranty however!

What you should do is insure it with o2 (dont show them phone, do it over phone if you can), wait 60 days, then claim under insurance.

Advocating insurance fraud = not a good thing IMO.

If you have it insured, you will be OK. Otherwise get a replacement from ebay ( very cheap ) and easy to follow instructions from Youtube. You'll be fine if you are anyway handy.

You must have knocked it off something. Phone screens do not spontaneously crack under normal conditions. Maybe if you were in the arctic circle it could happen but not when you're just going about your normal business.

While I don't use a case of any kind, this is why I always put the iPhone in my pocket with the screen facing inside. That way, if I do walk into a table, it won't crack the screen.

Sorry to read what happened, but there's literally no way the screen could have just spontaneously cracked without an impact of some kind. It really is very easy to knock your pocket off a table or edge or something else without noticing it, especially with the iPhone deflecting it!

Now, now. No more of that, please.

Thanks for the tip re. insurance fraud! To be honest the same thought crossed my own mind, but I still reckon the one-off cost of a dodgy repair job would be cheaper than the ongoing monthly insurance payments. That and the price of a decent new cover so it wont happen again!

As for how it spontaneously cracked - I know it must have been under some sort of pressure in my pocket or suffered some sort of bang. But I still think it's a bad sign of a phone if it can't hold up to just being in your pocket - what else are you supposed to do with it?

I'd say something if I noticed it happening, a noticeable bump or something - that'd be fair enough and I'd have no complaints what so ever. But just taking it out of your pocket cracked is ridiculous, not exactly very durable under normal day to day use.

Absolutely ridiculous! Every poster here knows you banged it off something and it was not "pressure"! It just didnt crack in your pocket or your sock!

Perhaps the unpleasant smell off your sock caused the screen to crack :P
