Okay, so the whispers are actually the dead people stuck on the island. Thing is, does that mean that other people we've seen were actually dead? I'm thinking of Harper (Goodwin's wife) here. I think Juliet heard the whispers, then Harper appeared. She spoke to Juliet, then Jack came along. Once Jack came, they heard the whispers again and suddenly Harper was gone. Not only have I wondered how she disappeared so fast, but also why she led Juliet to The Tempest. I had thought it was possibly Jacob or Smokey, but is it possible it was actually Harper's ghost? As evident with Michael, they seem to have some idea what's going on.

Which brings me to my next theory... Christian. Is Christian actually Christian? After all, it was Christian who helped Jack find a source of water in Season 1, and maybe Jacob or MIB can also communicate with the dead, and get them to help.

This would mean that even though the ghosts are appearing to Hurley (Jacob, Michael, Richard's wife), maybe they can appear to other people too.

Of course, there are flaws in my theory. Why wouldn't Richard's wife appear to Richard? Why did Yemi say to Eko "You speak to me as if I am your brother"?

I'm happy enough with the explanation of the whispers. Little bit of a cop out the way it was explained, but whatever, I'll go with it. But as with every answer Lost gives, it just raises more questions

Yemi was confirmed by Darlton to be MIB, as evidenced by the fact that he walks away and returns as the black smoke to open a can of whoop ass on Eco.

I think now we are looking at a combination of MIB shapeshifting and trapped "ghosts" to explain the visions of dead people on the island. Eg Yemi, Alex, Ben's mother and Dave were MIB. Harper, Michael, Christian and the blonde kid were ghosts?

i still think christian was MIB. but that doesn't explain how he appeared to Jack off the island in the hospital, it the same if he was a ghost as well. Micheal said they where all trapped on the island, (the ghosts that is) so either way Christian shudn't of been able to appear to Jack off the island. Maybe hes something else altogether, i highly doubt that myself but ya never know with lost.

I don't think it was ever confirmed that Dave was MIB. I just thought he was a manifestation in Hurley's head. He had already been seeing him in the mental hospital.

Good point. Makes me worry they haven't been very careful about who saw what. Eg why can Sawyer and Des see the blonde kid but Alpert can't? And if Harper was a trapped soul (she was accompanied by the whispers) why did Juliet see her?
Although there are problems I am glad they are moving towards some sort of resolution to these apparitions.

Hurley was seeing dead people off-island, whether they were trapped on the island as well I don't know. I assume "moving on" means more than just leaving the island.

Also, there's nothing to say that Dave wasn't a real person, a ghost rather than an imagining or MIB. Libby's late-husband was called David and I always liked the theory that she could see him too, hence the reason she was in a mental institute in the original timeline. However, it's still possible that the Dave Hurley saw on-island was MIB. He tried to lead Hurley over a cliff, which is exactly what Christian did to Jack.

I don't think Hurley's seeing of dead people is necessarily unique to him either. i.e. I don't think Jacob touched him and gave him a gift. Hurley's the best of them, the most optimistic and hopeful. It may just be that he sees dead people because out of all them he is the biggest believer. Even Locke was plagued by doubt in contrast.

So it's possible that all the characters have had moments in which they were open to visits by ghosts. Michael seeing Libby, Jack seeing Christian off-island, etc. But these visits were brief because they didn't truly believe.

This is my point. Not only was she accompanied by the whispers but she also vanished like a fart in the wind. Sure, when the whispers came, jack and Juliet swung round pointing their guns, but no way could Harper have run off that fast in an area that was fairly open (they were in the jungle but in some sort of clearing)

That's very interesting. I like it.
