How does one open a raw CR2 Canon file in Photoshop? I've PS7 on my system and cannot open a .cr2 file.

In short - you can't. I assume your camera is relatively new (newer than a 20D).

You would need to download something like a DNG converter from Adobe.

Convert your cr2 raw files to DNG, and then import in to Photoshop 7.

Adobe only support new cameras with each cycle of Photoshop.
However they do Camera RAW updates for new cameras that come out during their release cycle. For example the new 7D is supported on CS4 with an update since it came out before CS5.

However I don't think PS7 has Camera RAW. CS1 and greater iirc.

Thanks folks - much appreciated. 20D is my hardware, and I guess I need to upgrade PS, & convert the files in the meantime.

I assume that I don't lose any quality in the conversion?

You assumed correctly sir... You also gain space. Approx 15% smaller file size.

With Photoshop 7 and Canon 20D, you may just need to make sure you had the latest available ACR. I can't remember, but I think it's ACR 3.7. Not sure where you can get that though. I might have a copy on my old PC, so I'll check.

You can get them on the adobe ftp site
    ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/photoshop/cameraraw

Adobe have a compatibility table of cameras, versions of Adobe Camera Raw and versions of Photoshop and Elements. before upgrading to CS5 do consider Elements- 90% of the features at 15% of the price (less than E70 on Amazon). Elements has a longer lifecycle, so each version is compatable with more versions of ACR and hence more cameras.

Is that correct? Will Elements give me 90% of what CS5 will do? What are the key items that I might not get and actually say "damn, wish I had that"?

I doubt it is near 90% but it has curves and layers so it's pretty close.

90% of the good stuff maybe. (There is no HDR merge in Elements for example. )There are trial versions on the Website, and usually if you buy elementa and upgrade to CS5 They take what you paid for elements off the price of Cs5. (check that is still the case before you buy...)
