Problems with Sony ECM-MS907 Microphone

I've just bought a new Sony ECM-MS907 microphone. I used this model of mic in college (5+ years ago) and I remember being able to record really crisp stereo sounds; ambience, instruments etc.

The problem is that I just can't get a good level from the new mic; I've tried it with a Kodak Zi8 video camera, a minidisc recorder and my laptop - the level coming from the mic is barely audible on all of them. The battery is fresh and there's no physical damage on the mic.

What's even more mysterious is that I dug out my old 907 and I get the same problem. I have a feeling I've just forgotten how to use this mic; but it's so basic - I can't see what I could be doing wrong.

Any ideas?

Paul, I don't know what's wrong with it but you might try sending a message to this user on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BIKy7iR7Z4 since their setup is identical to yours and sounds like it's working fine.

It seems that there may be some sensitivity settings either on the microphone or camera that you can adjust. Certainly the microphone is not known to be the most sensitive, according to the Amazon reviews, so if you're recording very soft sounds you might need a different mic or some kind of pre-amp.
