Sky News HD launches May 6th

    Quote:
Sky News HD, the UK’s first high definition news channel, will launch on election night, May 6th, following the success of the Sky News Debate, which was simulcast in HD as a preview of the new channel.

This is going to launch to fanfare but quickly dissapoint when the various crappy newsfeeds come in from all over the world. Those almost grayscale crappy NTSC feeds from America will ruin it and wait until they show some mobile phone footage of some event. All it will allow me to do is see Kay Burleys pores or how haggard and burned out from drink looking Glen Oglaza is. It will be a waste of transponder space especially when not FTA, they should concentrate of getting some decent HD channels up there instead.

I have to say though that the quality on the Sky News HD preview is amazing. Possibly the best HD picture on Sky

agree with corm500. studio stuff and proper outdoor footage will look stunning. yeah some feeds will be ropey but thats on every HD channel. more often than not sky sports, espn, eurosport etc have some Brazilian division 3 first round volleyball match shot on an ipod which looks $hite

those preview films were brilliant. i wish they had another channel dedicated to em..

alas normal service has resumed. you're all right in one sense or another - i guess (almost) anything sky news themselves film will be shown in cutting edge HD but then almost every other source will disappoint. Stinicker makes a good point of this. i can see already there's even in-studio prerecorded footage in SD.. but of course sky's version of SD is good as it gets, so its going to be confusing.

still, BBC HD n Sky News HD are major updates to the EPG far as quality output goes so we're doing alright. primitive neanderthal TV3 keeping retarded ITV HD off the EPG is not a big issue, but C4 HD is still missed

:) Got Sky HD installed at the weekend and I have to say while Sky are well able to charge for their services, they sure deliver on picture quality. Sky News HD is stunning ( when showing true HD material obviously ) and Sky Sports HD is also way above anything I've seen on BBC HD. I also think that National Geo HD and Discovery HD also look stunning compared to BBC HD. Am I too harsh on the BBC or are the bit rates for the above mentioned channels, way above BBC HD's bitrate ?
By the way, I need to know for somebody else, do you have to pay the €15 extra pm to get Sky News HD or would you get it, if you had a HD box, normal sub, but not the HD sub ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,366 ✭✭✭Star Bingo

nah u won't get it w/o the HD sub.. but ITV HD n BBC HD are in 'other channels' so they'd get those.

-n yeah on the discovery/Nat Geo HD. i prefer to look at wildlife & architecture in HD sooner than people.. no offense people..

anyone think the quality of the SD channel has improved? looks like it to me. Maybe it's just the graphics.

here i just heard before 9 and again now on Sky News 'Irish protestors storming government buildings over bank bailout' .. but come RTE's 9 News there's nothing! too immediate/hot a topic for ours?

EDIT: briefly mentioned at the end. sky sensationalizing it seems.. but then the news seemed to have reached london before it reached dublin itself
