How is handicap calculated

    Hi..

In the process of joining a club to get a proper handicap and was wondering how it works..

On a par 72 if your 3 cards are 85-85-85 does that mean you will get a 13 handicap

Or if you go 79 83 80 is it those figures divided by 3 = 80.6 so you get a handicap of 8.6?

    Cheers:)

For calculating a handicap the first thing that's done is any scores that are more than a double bogey are adjusted to be a double bogey.
Then your handicap is your lowest (adjusted) gross score minus the SSS of the course.

So if you shot your 85 and it had a triple bogey on one hole, it would be adjusted to an 84
If the SSS off the white tees was 70 then your handicap would be 14
If you shot 79 off the back tees with an SSS of 73 then your handicap would be 6

You can get awarded a lower handicap than what the automatic calculation above suggests... maybe you were level thru 15 and finished with 3 double bogeys... I doubt I'd be awarding 6 in that case... I'd take an overview of all the cards to try and measure the level of golfer.
If you've held a previous handicap then let the secretary know because that gets taken into account also.

This may be of help to you.

This site suggests the average of the 3 cards but I've heard people say only the best card is used for the purpose of computing your initial handicap.

In any event it's a handy reference point for how the system works.

Licksy, you have answered this question and the "how does my handicap get adjusted after a competition" about 10 or 15 times. Perhaps a sticky about is in Order?

+1 and while you're at it can you put a sticky for people looking for advice on buying new clubs and a sticky for how CSS is calculated.

Could do... would like to make up a link depository at least. It's on the to-do list, somewhere below get some sunshine and play bad golf.

Oh and it's not the average that's used. When club2000 calculates a handicap, the only input is SSS, Par and Score. The handicap the software awards is always the difference between the lowest score and the SSS but as I said, this can be 'corrected' by input from the handicap monkey.

After 3 cards have been handed in, how long until you get the handicap?

Depends on how efficient your clubs handicap secretary is.
