Excessive tyre wear on one rear tyre

    Hi Guys and girls

I Have noticed over the past couple of months tyre noise was getting very loud in my celica so the other day i took a good look at all my tyres and noticed that the passenger side rear tyre is almost bald on the inside....
All the other tyres including the other rear are wearing evenly i think and seem fine for a good few miles yet...and even the outside of the affected tyre seems fine!!!!.

Is this serious?? Iv never really came across just one tyre wearing very bad...How could this have happened?will it be expensive?would a full wheel alignment sort it? will i also get away with buying just one new tyre?

Looks like the tracking is out on that wheel or something is damaged. Were both tyres put on at the same time? Does the other side have almost as much wear?

Well you'll need a new tyre regardless but you need to get it on an alignment machine. This will show the problem, it may be a simple alignment problem or may be a worn balljoint/bush etc.

Nope the other tyre has nowhere near as much wear and all 4 were put on the same time..
Could i get the alignment done say at the weekend but not buy a new tyre for a week or so??would that be ok i wonder..dont have the money to do both this week...

I had this problem with both back tryes before on an old Honda I had years back, it was both rear bushings that were gone.
I'm not sure if it was the inner or outer bushings though. But it would do no harm to jack it up and check your suspension arms for play etc.

Tracking or camber. Has the suspension been dropped?

That's the trailing arm bush. It and the large trailing arm double wishbone rear suspension was pretty much unique to Honda back then.

Nope nothing done to the suspension, car has the same alloys and tyres since last august and all was fine up until now...

Getting the wheels re-aligned doesn't put rubber back on the tyre!

Regardless of what is causing the wear, the tyre is all that keeps you car on the road so replacing it is the priority.
I'd get the suspension etc checked but ideally you need 4 evenly worn tyres have the alignment set accurately.

The other alternative is a faulty tyre. I have one... wears on one side, and noisily at that, regardless of which corner its on, or whether it's faced in or out.

Tho alignment is more likely the cause.

Could be a wheel bearing, shouldn't be too expensive either way.Couple of hundred will go a long way on the rear.
